Creation
The Cull Obsidian, also known as the Black Order, were created by Jonathan Hickman. They first appeared together as a team in Infinity #1. Although one of the five members, Corvus Glaive, made his first appearance in a Free Comic Book Day issue some months previously, and the other four members appeared separately in one panel cameos in New Avengers #8, Infinity #1 is the first instance in which they are united as the Black Order, and named as such. They make their first cover appearance as a group in New Avengers #9.
Corvus Glaive, Proxima Midnight, Supergiant, Black Dwarf and Ebony Maw form the five generals of Thanos' Cull Obsidian, meaning "Midnight Slaughter". Privately, they prefer to call themselves the Black Order, since it's less foreboding. Each member is also referred to as a Dreadlord.

The Black Order in the film- The members of the Black Order appear as major antagonists in Avengers: Infinity War. In the film, the group is instead known as the Children of Thanos, and its membership consists of Proxima Midnight, Corvus Glaive, Ebony Maw and Black Dwarf (renamed Cull Obsidian). In a departure from the comics, the members of the team were all children adopted and raised by Thanos, making them siblings to Gamora and Nebula. They are sent to Earth to steal the Mind Stone from Vision, and end up battling the Avengers and the forces of Wakanda in the process.
