    Back to the Future

The cover to Convergence New Teen Titans #2 - Game of Heroes is another homage to an original George Pérez image. It's from the first issue of New Teen Titans. Robin is holding Starfire surrounded by the other Titans with the Gordanians above. This was used later with Nightwing holding Wonder Girl in the classic "Who is Donna Troy?" storyline. Technically, it was also used for the death of Supergirl in Crisis on Infinite Earths. Here it is used to show the focus is on Cyborg. As ridiculous as it seems, Beast Boy is holding him. Because, hey, it's comics; and, comics should be fun.

The story opens with a cool splash page of Nightwing and Firehawk racing to meet one another. While they confer on how to work toward mutual benefit, the rest of the Tangent Universe's The Doom Patrol overpowers The New Teen Titans and kidnaps Cyborg. Starfire is angry because she feels that killing would have prevented Vic's capture. Her relationship with Dick, already fraying, strains even more.

Seeming hopeless, Vic gives in to his plight. It turns out he is just baiting his captors. The New Teen Titans are able to trace Vic and they mount a rescue.

    The Good

Wolfman and The New Teen Titans go together like franks and beans. he knows the characters. He is a talented, capable writer even on his worst day. Nicola Scott, Marc Deering and Jeromy Cox are great additions to the George Perez-Romeo Tanghal team.

There is some nice background on the Tangent Universe's Doom Patrol, which helps.

    The Bad

It's been awhile, so it's hard to see what Wolfman is trying to come across with between Kole and Jericho. Is Joe nervous about trusting Kole? Joe communicates through sign language, which doesn't come with interpretation, so there's that.

Also, this seems like an exercise in futility. Telos must know that pitting heroes against one another for a survival of the fittest might not work out. Starfire is one of only two characters with a bloodlust; and both are in the minority. There doesn't seem to be a way, or any effort made, to try to find Telos. It's never even considered.

    The Indifferent

This issue features an eight page text preview, with a checklist of the new DC YOU.

This issue also features a ten-page preview of Divergence Robin: Son of Batman.

This issue has the main story, along with two previews, all for $3.99.

    The Skinny

Convergence: The New Teen Titans is like a family reunion for the holidays. A little drama, a little tension, some fireworks, maybe a cook-out. And then everybody goes back home to the familiar... "status quo". Until next time. Driving away, waving, wishing that next time wasn't so long and far away.

Convergent: The New Teen Titans 2 earns four out of five stars for tagging all the bases for an infield homerun. Convergence doesn't seem to have the same high stakes or bite that the original Crisis had. This is very obvious in the conclusion. Still it's a diverting romp.
