NBC's Constantine has been struggling to really find its audience. While the show is far from a failure, it's also not what television execs would call a success for a first season. The show has sat in "season renewal purgatory" as NBC has made no clear call on what to do with the show. It isn't cancelled, but no one has come out to say it's been picked up for another season.
However, there are some rumors that NBC may move the show to one of its other networks. According to Cinelinx, their sources say that NBC is toying with the idea of moving it to one of their other networks in order to give it a second season because they do not want to give up on the show. Cinelinx is clear in saying this is currently an idea being talked about and not 100%.
Where does NBC apparently want to move it to? Syfy, where a recent marathon of Constantine did extremely well. In addition, if this were to happen, the show would be getting rebranded as Hellblazer as well, which will make fans of the comic book extremely happy.
While reading that original rumor, the first thought that came to my mind, as a fan of the show, was "if you don't want to give up on it, then just order a second season of 13 more episodes." That fanboy, illogical, overly-emotional thought aside, could moving the show, to a brand new network, for a new season really work?
Constantine on NBC made fans happy because they got to see a version of Constantine that was, how do I put this lightly, a lot better than the film and featured a British actor cast as the main role. On top of that, fans feel like John Constantine was captured extremely well. The essence of the character is up on the screen and the episodes that were adapted from the HELLBLAZER comic were awesome. It felt like the writers of the show got it. So the writing was there and the acting was there but the fans weren't. It didn't get the viewers it wanted.
However, taking a look back at the Syfy marathon, which apparently did very well. Could Syfy be a good home for the show? The die hard fans will for sure come over and if you've been keeping up with what Syfy has been doing, then you know as of last September, they were working on developing four different properties based off of comic books including DMZ, LETTER 44, PAX ROMANA, and RONIN. Also, with 12 MONKEYS going strong (it's really good), this could be the perfect time for them to take control over a second season and really focus on making this show even better. Yes, it's possible for this show to get better... and darker. Going to Syfy could easily allow for this show to get darker and tell stories that would't work out on a major network.
Changing networks isn't a new idea for shows. It's happened in the past, like with ABC's Cougar Town, which found new life on TBS. The idea really could work and the regular Syfy audience could find Constantine to be something they love. However, there's got to be some downside to all of this, right? Well, chances of the budget being as high as the first season at NBC are relatively low. Sure, Syfy could pump money into it, but it won't make as much in ad revenue as a show on a major network. However, you don't really need a major special effects budget for the show, consider that many times, the angel Manny doesn't appear with his full wings, in all his glory. He just appears in human form, and not all of John's magic tricks really need special effects when practical effects are a lot cheaper.
Whether NBC goes forward with Constantine or passes it off to Syfy, the show needs to go on. It may not have found the audience NBC was looking for, but it is one of the, if not the best start to a television show based off a comic book property. Where do you think Constantine should go? Should it stay on NBC or go to Syfy?
