Never having read anything even remotely related to Constantine, this episode was insane and I really liked it. Matt Ryan's acting was amazing anf the special effects didn't look that bad for a tv show. Can't wait to see more!
Constantine
Series »
John Constantine, master of the occult, is our world's last line of defense against the supernatural. He fights to save the innocent, but is it too late to save himself?
Constantine "Non Est Asylum"
@ostyo: Guess we can't have what we want...
@awesomeperson: Just joking.
The episode was fine. Not great by any means, but like you said, they had to get a lot of information in the first episode. Apart from the exposition, it was pretty good. I'm hopeful that it will pick up with Zed being introduced, and now that the conceptual intro is out of the way.
I loved Matt Ryan as John. He's absolutely perfect. I also loved that they actually made Chas immortal or regenerative. I think it's a great nod to the inexplicable fact that he survived the entire Hellblazer series.
It was a pretty good episode, but the writing and pacing were sooooo choppy, like, the plot was just jumping around everywhere.
@ostyo: Lol yeah
@k4tzm4n: Easter Eggs aren't really the same things...

Obviously, but it at least teases the possibility.
It just never really came together for me. Matt Ryan is good as Constantine, who's has some of his rougher edges sanded down a bit but that's understandable. Once Griffiths was canned though the pilot was pretty much DOA. With her being the focus of the episode and not coming back despite being set up as the lead. Perhaps if there was better world building it'd make sense but as it stands the episode was generic and not in the good kind of sense.
Marshall builds a solid visual language for the series and hey mabe Zed will be cool but it felt unfocused which is the exact opposite of what a pilot should be.
Cheap Plug to User Review
I really enjoyed the pilot. I haven't read much Hellblazer, just a few issues. But, I found the pilot to be pretty enjoyable and an interesting set of tone. Listen, I was one of the people who thought a Hannibal series on NBC was going to be crappy because it was on network tv. And...I was wrong. So, I'm willing to give Constantine a shot on NBC. Matt Ryan delivers, too. He looks the part and I thought he acted the hell out of the role in the pilot.
I was at NYCC, where they screened the pilot...and they mentioned that there would spots during the season where they were trying to sneak in his smoking. It wasn't explicitly said, but I'd wage NBC has a problem with the lead of a series having a smoking habit. Which, like stated in the review, is pretty weird considering how many dead bodies and some gore we get to see.
@ms__omega: I was sooo happy when she picked up the helmet.
@k4tzm4n: Hmmmm Guess so...
Pilot wasn't the best, but expecting so much better in further episodes, can never judge a show by a pilot in my opinion. It took me until episode 5 of Game of Thrones to say 'Okay, I'm on-board' because the early episodes of Game of Thrones weren't intriguing.
Still, Pilot was better than Gotham.
Weak pilot, but I'll still keep watching to see if if gets better. I still like the movie version better.
@numbuh1nerd: before she left she jotted down all the hot spots on the map..
this was a new scene that was added after the leak...also since the actor lady is leaving coz she isn't really needed
i liked it . even tough the ending reminded me of heroes
What happened?
@deathstroke52: the debut of the character issac mendez had similarities to the last scene in Constantine. that's not why I liked the show it was just something i noticed lol
I watched the first episode on hulu yesterday and enjoyed it. It's not perfect, but it's a good start with some future promise.
Loved it espically the nod to Dr. Fate
yep!!!
i can dig it, i really enjoyed it. So far DC is doing a great job, not one of their shows is weak so far.
I only got to see a screener copy, before changes were made, but as far as Constantine goes as a show made for a mainstream audience, they did well. It really looks like an NBC show and has some minor creepy elements, like Sleepy Hollow on Fox, so I'd say it was a four from me. Maybe a weak four. Pilots are always rough
Matt Ryan did an amazing job in that first episode, I really hope he can keep it up for the rest of the series.
The show does a great job of explaining itself, too. I watched the first episode with a friend who knew nothing about Constantine, and he got confused about maybe one thing throughout the entirety of the episode.
@squares: Well that's good, because if he's not confused it means he's not paying attention :)
@captainmarvel4ever: Good point.
Thoroughly enjoyed it tonight on Demand. Liv wasn't great but the rest of the show was very enjoyable. Looking forward to where this show leads us to and more importantly who else is out there.
Just saw it and loved it. If a mediocre show like Supernatural can stay on for 10 years, then there isn't any reason this show should fail.
