Strives for Epic-ness, But Falls Short

In a time-travel story Conan comes face to face with Kull.
In a time-travel story Conan comes face to face with Kull.

For some reason, both during creator Robert E. Howard's own lifetime, and during their later revival in the pages of Marvel Comics, Howard's first creation, King Kull, never quite achieved the popularity of his later barbarian hero, Conan of Cimmeria.

But the cancellation of Kull the Destroyer didn't stop Marvel from periodically bringing back Kull in the pages of other Conan books. Sometimes this would take the form of a backup feature. Others, such as 'Of Once and Future Kings!', the story in this issue, some form of sorcery brings the two barbarian heroes together.

This story also co-stars both of the two most popular female sword fighters from Conan's world, Belit and Red Sonja.

Yet despite the all-star cast, it's hampered by a contrived plot and awkward, verbose narration with a smattering of editing mistakes to boot! So it comes across like a TV show desperately pulling out all the stops during sweeps week in an attempt to avoid cancellation.

On balance that puts it somewhere in the middle of the road - buoyed a bit by all the characters brought together in one story, but hampered by the writing, and nowhere near as epic as it wants to be.
