Bale was born in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, Wales and started his acting career at the age of 8 in 1982, when he starred in a fabric softener commercial. From there he went into stage acting and landed a role alongside renowned actor Rowan Atkinson. Bale's career begun to take off some years later after receiving praise for his role as Jim Graham in Empire of the Sun.
Bale continued to display his wide range of acting talent by starring in various small and large stage, film, and voice productions, which eventually brought him to the attention of Christopher Nolan's who chose him to be the lead role in his Batman reboot.
Bale is the very definition of a character actor and someone who completely melds himself into whatever character he is currently playing. This is no more evident than when Bale played the character Trevor Reznik in The Machinist, this role saw Bale lose over 60 pounds, develop a harmful diet (of only coffee and apples) and sleeping patterns (going days without sleeping), in order to devote himself to the character.
Bale's commitment to his roles was also obvious when he gained 100 lbs to accurately play the part of Batman, going from around 130 lbs to 230 lbs in just under six months time.
