Chile is a Republic which gained independence from Spain in 1818. It suffered through the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet from 1973 to 1990. The democratic reforms since its fall have turned it into the leading nation of Latin America in terms of quality of life, political freedom and low rates of corruption and poverty. In terms of freedom of press, international press organizations place it ahead of most states in the Americas and on about the same level as Argentina and the United States. However it lags behind Canada.
Chile borders Peru, Bolivia and Argentina. It has long-standing territorial claims in Antarctica.
