Synopsis
Charlie McCarthy, Cowboy Detective
Charlie rides his donky Irmatrude towards Rattlesnake Gulch to place an ad in the newspaper. He is stopped on the way by a thief but is able to quickly get in his good graces. Charles makes it to town and runs into another tough character but side-steps a fight and makes yet another friend. He realizes that life in the west can be dangerous.
Charlie finds his friend Mortimer and the two discuss their plans for being in town. Mortimer is in town to let his cow Bessie meet some relatives while Charlie is trying to place an ad in the little-read newspaper. He wants to advertise something of value. Unbeknownst to the two friends, Coyote Kane is eavesdropping.
The friends go into a bar and order drinks. Before they leave, however, Coyote Kane robs Charlie of his item of value. Charlie can't believe it. He and Mortimer head to the newspaper office anyway and find a distraught and lovely reporter in tears. It seems that bandits have killed the last three of her subscribers and she fears that she'll have to sell her business to the corrupt Judge Rawson (whose gang is the culprit behind the recent subscriber deaths). Charlies promises to help the reporter.
The boys are tipped off that Judge Rawson owns the Bar-O Ranch. The head that way and dress like Native Americans to try and fool the judge's gang. The are pursued by a real Indian and he convinces them to change back into their cowboy clothes. They reach the ranch and Judge Rawson has a very difficult time believing that the two are right for his gang. Coyote Kane shows up and bounces the two off the ranch.
Lost, the boys run into the judge and his gang re-branding some cattle to the judge's brand. Mortimer runs off to find a camera to get this evidence against the judge. He finds the Chief who just happens to have his camera on him. Charlie snaps some pictures, but the sound tips off the outlaws and soon Charlie and Mortimer are running for their lives. Coyote Kane catches them and strings them up into a tree. Mortimer calls for his cow and Bessie wrangles up some other cattle and stampede the judge and his men away.
Charlie and Mortimer get the evidence of the judge's corruption to the federal marshall and the whole gang gets put in jail. The reporter is overjoyed, as now she can get subscribers to her newspaper.
Outside, Charlie finds that Irmatrude has found his valuables. He decides to advertise in a far less reader-friendly newspaper and hires an Asian paper to run his ad.
At the Circus
Charlies arrives at a circus and sees Mortimer working. Mortimer has been promised a ticket to the circus if he gets water for all the elephants. Charlie thinks that he can simply sneak in without doing any work and tries just that. He gets caught, however, and coerced into helping Mortimer. Charlie convinces Mortimer to do all the work while he gets revenge on the man that "hired" him. He ends up getting he and Mortimer fired. Charlie feels bad. Mortimer, however, has acquired two tickets anyway. The runner of the freak show had been worried that Mortimer standing outside would frighten away customers to he gave Mortimer two tickets to get away. The boys enjoy the circus together.
