Catrina

Origin

Catrina is a seductive, mysterious and shady individual, who first appeared at the Lucha Underground "Temple" and would appear to be an associate and manager for Mil Muertes. Mil Muertes himself, a monstrous luchador wrestler, deeply scarred and troubled from childhood trauma, where he experienced an Earthquake that killed his entire family and left him trapped for days. Catrina would act as Mil Muertes mouthpiece, the two seeming to have a common interest and fascination with death. Later it would be revealed that Catrina herself is no ordinary mortal being, rather she is extremely long lived, and most likely assisted and guided Mil Muertes, when he was young and trapped in the Earthquake that killed his family.

Acting as his wrestling manager, after Mil Muertes would defeat his opponents, Catrina would slither into the ring, to perform the Lick of Death. She would often intimidate and scheme behind the scenes of the Lucha Underground scene. Eventually Mil Muertes would come across his arch nemesis, Fenix. Where as Mil Muertes was known as The Man of a Thousand Deaths, Fenix, like the mythical creature that is his namesake, is known as The Man of a Thousand Lives. The two would be evenly matched, for a while, eventually though, after a series of losses, Catrina would question Mil Muertes competence and skill, leading to a dissolved alliance. Catrina would then seem to manage and assist Fenix. This too, however was just a manipulation, within a larger manipulation, in order to increase the power of Mil Muertes. The two would reappear after some time, with henchman, the Disciples of Death, and dominate much of the Lucha Underground Temple.

Creation

Catrina is a fictional character, created by the El Rey Network, for the Lucha Underground show. She is portrayed by actress and wrestler Karlee Perez (also known as Maxine) on the show. In 2016, El Rey Network would release a series of comics that use the characters from Lucha Underground, filling in details and plot points between Season One and Season Two.

In the second issue written by Justin Ortiz, Christopher Dejoseph and Fabian Rangel Jr, Catrina and Mil Muertes, as well as the Disciples of Death would be covered.

Character Evolution

Catrina would initially appear more innocuous than she would seem. Accompanying the fearsome Mil Muerte, the duo would be very intimidating. It will slowly be revealed that Catrina was much more than would meet the eye. Whilst it was obvious to all at the Temple that Mil Muertes was a threat, his powerful frame and size, fearsome, its most probable that Catrina is even more dangerous. The name Catrina of course, a reference to La Calavera Catrina, La Muerte, death itself.

Major Story Arcs

Trios Championship

One of Catrina's goals, would be to capture the Trios Championships, which would be the titles for the Lucha underground wrestlers who compete in stables of three. She would introduce Barrio Negro, El Siniestro de la Muerte and Trece as the Disciples of Death, a trio that would even defeat the then champions, Son of Havoc, Ivelisse, and Angelico.

Season Two

After Dario Cueto's disappearance, Catrina and Mil Muertes assert control and authority over the Temple. With Mil Muerte as the Lucha underground Champion and the Disciples of Death, Barrio Negro, El Siniestro de la Muerte and Trece as Trios Champions, the faction seems to ride a wave of victory. Eventually this string of success would end, as Mil Muerte would rebel against Catrina, the Disciples of Death would lose their Trio championships and then Mil Muerte would lose the Lucha Underground Championship.

Powers and Abilities

Catrina has vague paranormal abilities and powers. Almost supernatural like, but still very mysterious, the extent of them are also unknown. She has shown the ability to teleport, move extremely quickly, seem to endure being choked without showing discomfort or distress, among other unusual abilities. She has claimed to be more than mortal, and almost two centuries old. It may be possible that she is some sort of supernatural being.
