    There Can Only Be One

    The Story:

The decision on who will wield the infamous Captain America shield is made when Steve Rogers insists that Bucky should continue as Captain America.

    My Thoughts:

It seems like Ed Brubaker only gets better each time he writes another issue of Captain America. This series has been so compelling since it's inception, earning Brubaker an Eisner award for his writing on it. Over the years he's managed to breathe new life into Steve Rogers as well as Bucky when he took up the mantle of Captain America. Now with the return of Steve Rogers, the question is who will wield the shield?

Brubaker writes a modest Rogers who empathically insists Bucky continue as Captain America. Bucky counters the offer but in the end, submits to Steve's request. It was great to see the brief team up between Rogers and Bucky as they take down Mr. Hyde. From there the rest of the story follows Bucky as he teams up with Falcon to take down the Watchdogs who have formed an alliance with William Burnside, or as Bucky dubbed him; Captain Un-America. Again Brubaker is in prime form delivering a compelling story with an espionage feel. He delivers another great testament of why Bucky is so deserving to be Captain America.

Luke Ross and Butch Guice are the two artists behind this story arc. Ross handles the art on all but one issue to outstanding results. The darker, pulp-like tone accommodates the grittier feel of the story exceptionally well. I was disappointed at the departure of Steve Epting but it's a relief to know that a talented artist like Ross was coming in to fill the position.

This was another great installment of one of my favorite series Marvel has ever published. Anyone who hasn't read Brubaker's run on Captain America is definitely missing out on a great comic series. There's a reason this series has won an Eisner award and I encourage you to find out why.

    Rating: 4.5/5
