    Captain America

Character » Captain America appears in 11751 issues.

During World War II, Steve Rogers volunteered to receive the experimental Super-Soldier Serum. Enhanced to the pinnacle of human physical potential and armed with an unbreakable shield, he became Captain America. After a failed mission left him encased in ice for decades, he was found and revived by the Avengers, later joining their ranks and eventually becoming the team's leader.

Who else thinks the Captain America film was too cheesy ?

Before you all angrily dismiss me I would like make clear, I like a lot of things about the film (listed in no particular order)

    1. Evans nailed Cap's character IMO
    2. The costume was awesome
    3. Tommy Lee Jones and Tucci were great
    4. The romance with peggy was really believable
    5. Cap is one of my personal favorites so I did not make this thread out of spite.
    6. Also the ending was great, the avengers trailer an added bonus.
    7. Incoporation of the USO show was very clever.

What I did not like are the following (almost all problems are hydra related)
    1. The Red Skull came off as cheesy, comical and nothing and one dimensional, Arnim Zola as his bumbling sidekick did not help matters IMO. I thought the Skull should be more scary and menacing.
    2. The almost complete exclusion of the Nazis in favor of Hydra seemed silly and kind of forced. It made it harder for me to invest in the story. (I know they did this to be more kid friendly which was necessary for the films success)
    3. The double handed "hail hydra" salute looked ridiculous. Almost half the audience laughed hystreically whenever they did it.
    4. Bucky's death had no emotional impact IMO
5.Much of the wirework was poorly executed.
    6. This is my main point: I could not honestly believe that Captain America was set in the same universe as Iron Man which I felt seemed realistic in comparison. I was not alone in thinking this, I saw the film with 6 friends who had never picked up a comic book, and they were universally negative about the film. They were in shock when the avengers trailer revealed to them that Cap and Iron Man were supposed to co-exist. However at the same time none of them had anything negative to say about Iron Man.

While there was much I loved about the Captain America movie, I felt that the cheesy elements overshadowed what was great about the film. Does anyone on comicvine agree with me?

I thought that the little bit of camp that I noticed was well placed for a movie set in the 40s. I did notice the bit of flawed wirework but I disagree with your complaint about Weaving's Red Skull. I thought he was ruthless and great, though I may be biased because of my love for the actor.

There were a few cheesy moments, but it could have a lot worse. The costume alone can't be anything but cheesy, so I was pleasantly surprised that they made it work as well as they did.

    1. So, a guy who can burst people into dust and is drugged up on super 'roids with his face missing, PLAYED BY HUGO WEAVING isn't menacing? I disagree, needless to say. (Zola was just neutral to me).
    2. They mentioned them plenty of times. "And they will personally escort Adolf Hitler into the gates of hell!". They just didn't have Cap VS Nazis, is all. They were in the story. (Besides, all the Hydra guys are basically just super-nazis anyway).
    3. Not my audience.
    4. I loved the scene where Steve realizes he can't get drunk and the impact that Bucky's death had on him was well done IMO.
    5. ... Not an expert on that, so IDK.
    6. Don't you mean "I could honestly NOT believe"?

I agree on a lot of points, the Bucky scene could've been played out a lot better but the impact on Cap gave it all. The movie was excellent IMO. Chris Evans did extremely well as Cap, and yet again proved he's not just the "funny" guy.

I loved the romance between Cap and Peggy, it was realistic and believable. Job well done between Evans and Atwell. Hope she makes an appearance one way or another in a sequel. I honestly don't have many things to complain about. It was one of the best re-designed origin stories I've ever seen so far and if there is a sequel, I hope Marvel brings back Johnston as Director.

    1. I felt the Red Skull was very well done, but the final time you saw him was a bit... anti-climactic? Idk, hopefully they explain where he went and what he's doing.  Idk anything about Zola, so I'm not gonna go there.
    2. They had plenty of Hitler references and I expected no Nazis in the film at all. I'm happy they were at least mentioned.
    3. Nobody was laughing when I went (both times). Also, I loved their motto "Cut off one head, two more will grow in its place."
    4. The actual death itself wasn't well done, (I'm a fan of the whole exploding missile story from the comics) but I really liked the scene where Steve realized he couldn't get drunk.
    5. The only time it looked weird was when Cap was fighting the Red Skull on the plane-thingy, but that was only because it was going straight down and the G-Force was sending them up.
    6. It's a period piece in set in the 40's, dude. Of course it's gonna be cheesy. Besides, this movie tied a lot of things together:
-The use of the serum in The Incredible Hulk
-The origin of the Cosmic Cube was from Asgard as seen in Thor
-Howard Stark's involvement in the whole film answered some questions left from Iron Man 2

I have to disagree about Steve/Peggy romance. I never felt chemistry between them. The scene in the rain from the Incredible Hulk was more romantic than the whole Steve/Peggy story).

well i personally liked the film, the only thing i didn't like was the steve peggy relationship, it just seemed to develop out of nowhere, they knew virtually nothing about one another, yet they liked each other? the whole romance was unnecessary

I was disappointed by the film. It wasn't a bad movie as such. But I think I'd hyped it a bit too much in my mind.

I liked the entire movie. I thought Hugo Weaving was an exceptional Red Skull. If there was poor wire work I didn't notice, I thought the Hydra salute was actually kinda cool, it was simialr enough to the Nazi salute to acknowledge their roots but different enough to show them as a splinter group.  And I thought they did a good job with the Steve/Peggy romance especially with the knowledge that I knew what was going to happen, it still came off as believeable and tragic to me. Just my opinions though.

Just watched it for the second time and changed my mind as I loved it. My only concern now is that Cap's love interest in the Avengers will be Sharon Carter which bothers me because I always found the peggy/sharon carter thing waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay creepy. I hope imdb is wrong.

Nope. It's gonna be Cap and Sharron. The question is who will be Sharron? Some say the female agent in the room when cap woke up will be sharron, others think that Haley Atwell will come back and play sharron due to the fact that she signed on for a multiple picture deal.

There were parts that seemed cheesy that seemed like they were supposed to be cheesy, such as the Howling Commando's and the Hail Hydra salute, and then there were parts that were cheesy that just seemed strained. Unfortunately the romance part was pretty cheesy. Cap had more chemistry with Tommy Lee Jones. The one scene that really made me laugh was when Cap woke up in the United States of Extreme Ad-placement.

Still, compared to Thor, Cap had almost no cheese at all.

Woah, woah woah just because someone has a different opinion to you does not mean you can insult, in arguing that is actually a rhetorical fallacy known as Ad hominem (attacking the arguer, not the argument). You really shouldn't do it because it doesn't help you make your point it just makes you come off as overly opinionated.

Your not wrong in saying not all insults are ad homs. But in this case calling someone a "loser" because they had legitimate criticisms of something you enjoyed instead of trying to counter their argument definitely qualifies as an ad hominem fallacy.

Calling the Captain America film being cheesy is really unfair, mostly because this film wasn't specifically made for comic-fans alone.  Maybe i'm speaking as a family man rather than a comic-fan, but seeing my family (who knows absoluetly nothing about Captain America) watching and fully enjoying the movie had me forget the screw-ups or concerns that this movie made.
But as a comic fan, my biggest problem was seeing Captain America being flown around on strings way too many times.

It was done alright.  You have to keep in mind that a film has to be able to carry an audience along.  So it has to be at a speed  for non comic readers also.  The movie almost out did Thor for the first week.  60 plus million.  Thor by the way  is #5 for Marvel films, domestic and worldwide sales.
