When the government sets up a governing body to oversee the Avengers, the team splinters into two camps—one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability.
Tony doesn't have the practice and expertise in h2h to be able to keep up with someone like Cap much less when he has Bucky with him. Also, even if the punches weren't hurting him or his armor that much they would still be knocking him around quite a bit since Tony's suit is lightweight and won't be able to absorb the blows that well.
Tony had an arm injury and his suit was being damaged pretty significantly in that fight alone, not counting anything that may have come from the airport battle. It seemed fine to me, especially with that rally Tony had after analyzing Steve's fighting style.
