The intrigue continues...
People might not be talking about the Death of Captain America all that much anymore, and a lot of people picked up Captain America #25 and didn't bother to continue the series after that... those people are missing out on a series that constantly delivers every month. A lot of people thought it was kinda odd that the series continued after the death of the title character, but it's continuing with a purpose and an intriguing storyline to boot.
Even though this is the 3rd issue since Cap's death, the story itself is not any less intriguing. Just when you think you have a good grasp of everything that's going on, Brubaker throws a Ampersandwrench into the mix. Here it is in the form of a letter to Tony Stark that might peak your interest more then anything else that's happened in the last 4 issues. It shows how a good writer can keep readers coming without resorting to cheap guest appearances and putting action in just for the sake of having action in a issue.
Now that doesn't mean there isn't any guest appearances in this storyline, the title character is dead after all. The difference however is that every single character that appears in this issue (and the entire story) actually makes sense. They either have very close ties to Steve Rogers, or actually have a purpose in advancing the plot in some way.
I'm always praising Ed Brubaker's writing, but I should also mention that Steve Epting and Mike Perkins's artwork contribute a great deal to how good this series is. Brubaker's story is routed in his noir style with great intrigue thrown in, and the artwork compliments that perfectly. Not a lot of artists would be able to draw the new Serpent Squad in a serious story arc without making it look totally ridiculous... but Epting and Perkins pull it off with ease. So... just go buy this book.
