Martian Manhunter battles D'Kay D'Razz on Mars, while Firestorm deals with Deathstorm and his Black Lanterns.
The Good
We're roughly 6 months into this storyline, and overall, it's been pretty enjoyable. This issue, in particular, has a lot of solid writing, and great artwork. If you're a Martain Manhunter fan, you'll fully enjoy this issue. This book goes pretty in depth into his history, and it does a great job at it. This issue also covers what's going on with Firestorm and Deathstorm (Black Lantern Firestorm). It's pretty quick, so don't blink, but it's solid stuff.
The Bad
First thing's first, I don't like Martian Manhunter, so this issue was a bust for me, big-time. I liked him better dead, so the only bits about this book I truly enjoyed were the small Boston Brand and Firestorm bits. Aside from that, this train seems to be slowing down, and frankly, it's just not that interesting anymore. If this book focused more on Boston Brand, which is the coolest part of the book, I'd be all in, but I'm just not as excited as I once was for Brightest Day. It's getting to the point where the tie-ins are so much better than the actual story.
The Verdict: 2.5/5
I wasn't the biggest fan of this issue, but you can't deny the writing and art are pretty strong. Again, I'm not a Martian Manhunter fan, so an issue revolving around that character isn't going to excite me. If you are a fan of that character, I'd recommend this book highly. If you're a casual reader of Brightest Day, I'd actually say pass on this, since there's nothing in this issue that drives the whole story forward.
I'm with the emperor, I love the Martian Manhunter and I'm glad his story continues to be told (even though @ NYCC Didio spoiled the ending of his story)

Yeah, with this series, it's all about who you like. I'm loving the Aquaman stuff, which I'm pretty sure many people aren't too keen on
@inferiorego: I don't know why anyone wouldn't like Aquaman especially since that is who Johns is working the hardest on. I thought it was interesting @ the DC Panel, Didio was asking the crowd to give pops regarding who they were excited to bring back. So when he said Aquaman, loudest, next loudest was Martian Manhunter, then Firestorm...Hawkman NOT one pop. I was like wow.

If feel the same way, but I still hear people complain about Aquaman. As for Hawkman, well, he's just a so-so character in my opinion.
@inferiorego: Yea, I guess you're always going to find that one but I was very happy BOTH at the Geoff Johns panel and @ DC Nation panel you got pops for Aquaman, Black manta, Mera, and new Aqualad. By far, the most enthusiastic response for the return of a classic DC character.

I think what it comes down to for a lot of DC fans is that I feel like I've been involved with this storyline for so much more than six months. When everything is said and done, and I have the whole storyline in front of me to read, I'm sure I'll enjoy it, but right now, I'm struggling to read issue-to-issue. I did say I'm enjoying this storyline, but this last issue was only so-so for me. 2.5 isn't a bad score, but it's not a good score either. It's mediocre. But that's just my personal opinion.
Wow, you guys are some tough critics. I think it's cool to get stories about characters that aren't the TRINITY. Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, Deadman, Hawkman, etc.. are great characters. The entire seven they brought back for Brightest Day are cool as hell. They should have intriguing stories too!!! Why does everything cool, in your eyes, have to ONLY be about Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, and Wonder Woman??? Each BD book concentrates on one character for the most part. This round it's Martian Manhunter. Take it down a notch and chill haters. Geoff Johns will take care of us. Put down the hate-orate and pick up a tasty Martian Manhunter and eat with an Oreo cookie.

for real dude I love this book, I wish I didn't have to wait 2 weeks for an issue its so good. I love seeing stuff about MM, Aquaman, Deadman, Firestorm. They are all great characters. I don't really care for Hawkman though. He's alright, I don't mind reading his issues but I just don't see what Hawkworld has to do with the White Lantern...
@inferiorego: On every fansite or board where I have seen a poll or discussion (including the NYCC DCU Panel), Aquaman always wins by a landslide in the "favorite" category for storyline in Brightest Day. In the Geoff Johns panel at NYCC there were just as many questions about Aquaman, Mera, and Aqualad as there was about Green Lantern and the Flash.

Alright, then. I can understand that. I personally read Blackest Night in trade and then bursted through the previous eleven issues of this, so it has been a collected reading experience for me.
Now, that I have hit the wall, perhaps I will feel it as well, though I certainly hope not.
People review comics so that other people can know what comics are worth buying and what comics are not worth buying. This saves us money. This allows us to read higher quality books. This allows solid books without famous characters to gain readership which allows said books to continue being written for our enjoyment.
Nobody is being "a hater to hate." We're being haters because we want good books, not crappy ones. If you have bad taste and are perfectly happy reading mediocre books? More power to ya. Don't get so butthurt if the rest of us don't feel the same.

Yeah, but when a book get knocked down because of a pre-existing opinion of a character it doesn't really help. When the main negative is "I've just never like Martian Manhunter" it doesn't really tell you about the quality of the comic. There's no frame of reference. It's like someone who confesses to not liking hip-hop reviewing Lil Wayne's new album. How much do you learn about the record when it's I don't like rap so it's mediocre."
I finally got around to reading this issue and I must admit that I REALLY enjoyed it. Granted, that is probably because I like MM but I have not enjoyed an issue of BD this much since first 5 or so.
geoff johns is the king of sales. he could make a mediocre story with more than half of the character that no one cares, but the book will still be top3 on the sales chart of the month. example: brightest day
