I thought that making the Kingpin black was a horrible idea and its part of the reason I never bothered to watch the Daredevil movie.
I dont like it when things are different than the comic, I try to tell myself its not Earth 616 or whatever the hell and that helps me deal with it. This is how I justify watching and enjoying Young Justice.
It does suck when kids who dont know the source material grow up thinking Deadpool has a sealed mouth and knife arms. I feel bad for those poor kids.
They kinda snuck in the black Nick Fury into the movies by making him pop up as cameos. That was sneaky, I dont think I would of gone to see a Nick Fury movie with Sam Jackson.
I will go see the Avengers though and probably enjoy it all the same even though I dont agree with making Fury a black guy. I will convince myself its ok cause its not in Marvel continuity or I imagine the real Nick Fury is underneath Samuel's face and hes just elaborately disguised as a black guy.
I guess I pick and choose when to get butt hurt over these types of things.
I do know one thing for sure, I will never in a million years watch a Black Panther movie with a white guy.
Black Panther
Character » Black Panther appears in 3342 issues.
T'Challa is the Black Panther, king of Wakanda, one of the most technologically advanced nations on Earth. He is among the top intellects and martial artists of the world, a veteran Avenger, and a member of the Illuminati. Using his powers and abilities, he has pledged his fortune, powers, and life to the service of all mankind.
How Do You Make A 'Black Panther' Movie?
In my opinion that Deawon Delenay dude has the best casting and a pretty good setting.
Really it should focus on Wakanda and what leads to the country being so isolated. As for the Black Panther itself it should actually just be about the people who became Black Panther and why he is such a symbol for the Wakandans. Like why the Black panther is the poretector of Wakanda. Why is the Panther more woshipped than the Lion or Gorilla cults.
I also feel that theChristopher Priest version should be represented over Hudlin's. It just opens for more story arcs to add or spin off shows like a Kasper Cole White Tiger spin-off series.
Plus on top of that we need to have a movie in Africa showing africans not being ignorant idiots running around looking like savage idiots needing a caucasion hero or Nelson Mandela to save them. I feel that we need have a movie showing Wakandans being normal human beings in country getting put in a dire situation with the Black Panther leading them and keeping things together. This can really put Black Panther on the map.
I will put my two cents about the subject of race. I know some people say that race shouldn't be an issue in comics. I disagree, I feel that we do. I like reading comics about superheroes who go thru the same problems we do. I know this is wrong wrong but I do find it interesting that Luke cage and Jessics jones get so much heat for their interracial relationship cause really it is something that we go thru in real life. I like how Elijah Bradley and Kate(hawkeye) can't date due to their economic and racial backgrounds.
I have read some of the comments about how making T'Challa a caucasion shouldn't matter. No it does matter. Black Panther is icon in the black community. People who have read Truth Red White and Black, Isaisah bradley is an icon.
There is a difference between Black Panther and Nick Fury. Nick Fury is an iconic superhero. and yesh he does make a difference in the Marvel Universe. Do I feel that the Ultimate Universe should have changed racial backrgounds among superheroes? No, but I can see why. I do think putting Ultimate Nick Fury in the Marvel 616 movies is a bad idea.....period. To be honest I am not a Nick Fury fan cause I dont see the big deal of someone always hiding behind life decoy models. That's just me,
Black Panther is the first black superhero...the first. You make cast a caucasion or someone light skinned, that is suppose to be from an African Nation that has never really broke bread with caucasions and country full of chocolate skinned and dark skinned africans then you asking for a outright boycott. Many people will take it as a message of saying that "Only a caucasion can tame africa."
Back to the movie..I think the movie should be more Wakando getting noticed by Axis and Allies. Like start with Azzuri meeting Captaian America(People love Cameos), then move to Tchaka and with him getting killed by Claw and then finished the movie with TChalla taking the role of Black Panther and him starting a relationship with the avengers and adding Wakanda to the UN.
As for casting this is the perfect cast. (Those of you who said Will Smith should be T'Challa need to be smacked in the mouth. That overrated non-taleneted so-called actor can't even act being original superhero. Can we say Hancock?)
T'Chaka - Peter Mensah (Persian Mesanger from 300)
T'Challa - Chiwetal Ejiofor (Watch this guy in Amistad, Serenity and Black belt, you will see he is the perfect choice)
S'Yan - Djimon Hounsou (yeah he has T'Challa's voice but the guy is gettng old)
Ororo Munroe - Thandie Newton (If she gained some weight, but I loved her as Condolizza Rice Impersonation in W.)
Erik Kilmonger - Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje
Shuri - Kandise Mcclure (Battlestar Galactica)
M'Buku aka Man-Ape - Michael Jai White
Ulysses klaw - Clive Owen
Mother Ramona - Angela bassett
Well, he isn't the first Black superhero. I don't think. I kind of think they should use Priest's approach to Black Panther's personality, but Hudlin's arc on the first run that was adapted into the Black Panther show that was briefly on BET.
I think the story should start with Tchaka fighting a war against the ape clan and protecting his people from harm. Making brave sacrifices and having great emotional showings inorder to connect the character with the audience (for emotional value when he later is killed). Wakanda is then depitced and shown as a beautiful, advanced, healthy nation where it's people interact and live soundly. Tchaka Finds white wolf (I don't care if he's made to be a white guy or not) and takes him in as a son. Tchaka Later has Tchalla and the white wolf resents him and Tchaka since Tchaka gives more focus to Tchalla.
Then Tchalla and White Wolf (as a young teens) are shown being sent on his ceremonial travels through Africa upon which Tchalla takes notice of all the struggle and war going on outside of his isolationist nation of Wakanda. White Wolf shows little empathy for the outsiders and it only cements his belief that Wakanda shouldn't reach out to what he thinks is a savage outside world. Tchalla choses to go abroad to the US (because it has to happen) for his studies and see's some of the same poverty, crime, and struggles there. Ofcourse he does a small amount of streetcrime fighting there to help stop it (helping all races of citizens). He speaks to his father (via phone or device) about wakanda's isolationism, all he's seen on his travels, and it's ability to be help the world but it creates small amount conflict with his father because of Tchaka's distrust of outsiders (created by the events seen in his lifetime like slavery and the sale of fellow Africans by other Africans as well).
Tchaka eventually starts to come around though and decided to meet with other nations to improve relations. White Wolf takes this as a sign that Tchaka is getting weak and devises a plan with the aid of Klaw. Scene's later Tchaka is killed by Klaw in a national meeting assassination (ala the Motion comic). Tchalla after getting the news has to come home. A battle royal for the mantle takes place with White Wolf and Tchalla making it to the finals. White Wolf somehow wins and takes the thrown casting Tchalla out of Wakanda with intent to turn wakanda into an aggresive nation that seeks to conquor of destroy any other nation it deems a potential threat (starting with the US). Tchalla (now banished) trains in various forms of Martial arts (rocky scene!) and prepares himself further to defeat The White Wolf. With an impending war with the United States Tchalla infiltrates shield HQ (takes down a large number of guards ^_~) and confronts Nick Fury telling him to delay his assault on Wakanda and that he (tchalla) will take his country back to avert war. Fury agrees and Tchalla is off to Wakanda. Still having allies there opposed to White wolfs plans Tchalla is met by Shuri (or a Dora) and is lead to the Heart shaped herb and a place to test himself before the panther God. He does so, passes, eats the herb, and takes down the Wolf and Klaw.
that's the jist of what I'd like to see.
How about my namesake Denzel in the title role( or maybe he's getting a bit too long in the tooth at 57?)
Terry
I think it'd be pretty sweet if it were a no comedy type, will smith would be pressured into cracking jokes. maybe somebody like isiaih Washington, or wood Harris from next day. This movie, if rushed, will be a black iron man, or a an African batman. They have to plan and always think, "would an African king with an above sea level Atlantis like kingdom do this?" Also keep in mind he lives in Africa, meaning hes got plenty threatening his people right at home. Drug cartels, slave trade, weapons shipping, black market exchange, vibranium thieves, and embezzlement.
Mainly, they should go political as well as action.
that would be the perfect mix to balance a king as well as a warrior
The best way to make a Black Panther movie is to go all in.
If you fear the name Black Panther or fear the idea of a powerful black super hero it will fail because the lack of confidence in the product will manifest itself on the big screen.
Barack 'Hussein" Obama made it as president with that name and almost four years later it has been proven that it did not mean what many before he was elected implied that it meant.
Every time that an effort is made to avoid or hide from the true concept of Black Panther it continues to fail so the approach should be to put that name out there and ride that "Storm" of controversy.
There will be those who shy away from it at first but once the trailers show the action potential this type of movie could catch a buzz of excitement because for the first time in a long time a movie steps out of the boundaries of the standard norm for super hero movies.
There is no other movie that could compare to this one so it might create a whole new genre upon its release… That is if Marvel is willing to take that chance!
