    A New Black Panther

    The Story:

T'Challa is severely injured at the hands of Dr. Doom and now lies helpless in a coma. The people on Wakanda feel vulnerable without him and are forced to seek out a new Black Panther if they have any hope of stopping Morlun who is on a rampage making his way to the King.

    My Thoughts:

This is the beginning of a new Black Panther series that only ended up lasting for twelve issues. These first six issues definitely started off with a bang. It's written by Reginald Hudlin who was the writer of the previous Black Panther series. I'm not very fond of him at all. I thought his efforts on the previous series were awful and at times frustrated me because I wanted to read a well written Black Panther series. Thankfully his writing on this story arc was that of an experienced writer. I always felt like the only thing he cared about in terms of the Black Panther was the characters skin color. It seems like he finally put that aside and decided to tell a well thought out story. I enjoyed the plot twists that unfolded which only heightened my interest and excitement.

This was a different approach to the Black Panther series in which Wakanda is invaded and is temporarily left without a King as he lie in a coma. I think that's what made this story so compelling. A nation which has never been conquered has been left extremely vulnerable. Enter Morlun. If you know who Morlun is then you can imagine how his presence here only makes this story even more awesome. You can feel the sense of urgency, desperation and hope at the turn of every page. A great story of courage and overcoming adversity is displayed in a nice format.

The art is by Ken Lashley who crafts standout material. I was thoroughly pleased with the artwork. It was a perfect match for this series. Everything about it was great. The inks and Paul Mounts colors were superb. The way Lashley designs the scenery of Wakanda in the background of the panels was amazing. The intense action sequences were laid out perfectly. All the covers were beautiful as well the the extra variants at the end.

This is by far the best Black Panther comic I've ever read (so far). The writing and artwork were on point. I'm curious to see what direction this series heads next which is a first for me when it comes to Black Panther.

    Rating: 5/5
