Dinah Lance was born into a family of crime fighters; her mother was a vigilante and her father is a cop. She grew up with the company of heroes, and after years of training, followed in her parent's footsteps by assuming the costume, identity, and legacy of her mother Dinah Drake, the Black Canary.
@darkdetective27: I'd recommend Green Arrow/ Black Canary: For Better or Worse. You get most of the outline of her story and the significant moments of the character. The first ever appearance of Dinah Laurel Lance lies in the first comic extract in that book, but to flesh out the original idea of her origin check out Justice League of America #220.. Post-Crisis, her origin can be explored in Secret Origins #50 (1990), also check out her two-page origin story drawn by Howard Chaykin (it's either free for download on comixology or in the gallery of her profile here).. Birds of Prey: Of Like Minds is highly recommended. Dinah Drake's first appearance in Flash Comics #86 onwards projects the character's mainstay Modus Operandi on various adventures, breaking gangs from the inside and her first appearance mistaken for a villainess. For the post-Flashpoint rendition of Black Canary read up on Birds of Prey (throughout the series a lot of details of her past life is revealed), Team 7 (not all good stories but you get a lot of important details about her new incarnation), Secret Origins #11 (New 52) and then maybe a few stories in Batgirl to see where she ends up in the new Black Canary series (which is awesome btw)!
