An American Indian totally immersed in "White man's world," Johnny Ravenhair was given a necklace talisman by his great-grandfather who had once been the Shaman of the legendary Bison cult. When his great-grandfather was killed by muggers, Ravenhair found himself possessed by the old man's spirit, which granted him superpowers and he set forth to avenge the white man's many injustices against his people.

Various acts of destruction brought Black Bison into conflict with Firestorm, who tore the mystic talisman from around Bison's neck and thus restored him to normality.

There were two people who took on the name and persona of Black Bison and both died. The original Black Bison has been identified as one of the deceased entombed below the Hall of Justice.

    Blackest Night

During the Blackest Night, John Ravenhair was raised by a black power ring and became a Black Lantern. He tried to kill Flash, Atom and Mera in the Headquarters of the Justice League.
