Batwoman is getting her own series once again. DC Comics announced Marguerite Bennett will be writing with Steve Epting handling the art. James Tynion IV and Bennett will be co-writing the first arc and prelude story, which begins in Detective Comics in January.

Here's all the details:

Readers of the current DETECTIVE COMICS run have seen firsthand the prominent role that Kate Kane, a.k.a. Batwoman, plays in training Spoiler, Orphan, Clayface, Red Robin and even Nightwing—the next generation of Gotham City’s protectors. This February, Marguerite Bennett (DC COMICS BOMBSHELLS, BATGIRL, EARTH 2: WORLD’S END) will be writing the new adventures of the heroine in an ongoing monthly series scheduled to debut in February 2017, with art by Steve Epting – his first work for DC in more than fifteen years. As part of the next wave of REBIRTH titles, the February title will be a REBIRTH-themed one-shot, with a new issue #1 to follow in March.

“Batwoman is yet another example of the character depth, richness and diversity present in Gotham City,” said Batman Group Editor Mark Doyle. “Fans have really responded to her role in DETECTIVE COMICS, and we all love Kate here in the Bat-office, so that made it an easy choice to return her to a solo series.”

As a preface to her new solo adventures, Bennett will join James Tynion IV on “Batwoman Begins,” a two-issue story arc in DETECTIVE COMICS. Following the Night of the Monster Men, Batwoman and Batman discover that the venom from the defeated monsters’ corpses is being sold as a bioweapon. After Batwoman comes face to face with the villain responsible, Batman gives Batwoman a mission that takes her around the world, creating the backdrop for her new solo series in February, whose first story arc will also be co-written by Bennett and Tynion IV.

"There has never been a heroine I have loved more than Batwoman,” said Bennett. “Her flaws, her ferocity, her struggle to rise above her own history and find a way to serve the greater good and those she loves—she's always cut me straight to the bone. To be a queer woman and to see a queer woman as not just a part but a pillar of the Bat-family was life changing, inspiring and gave me the courage to pursue this career in comics. The opportunity to add to Kate Kane's story and legacy is both an honor and a sincere dream come true."

Batwoman has a rich visual history and I’m thrilled to be a part of it!”

Awesome! Batwoman definitely deserves to have an ongoing series again and I couldn't be more excited for this creative team! I do wonder how this will effect the future of Velvet with Epting on art duties here but regardless I'm glad to see him work on some DC characters.

Well, Batwoman was one of my favourite N52 Titles... so let's hope she will have at least a good run :)

Barely. They're referring to her training of the others in Detective Comics and Nightwing is involved briefly with the Night of the Monster Men storyline. He may have been in the end of the first arc, but I don't recall him being much of a presence if he was.

@laughingbatman: still bugs me. Dick has been a hero almost as long as Bruce and he and Tim have done more than Kate has even dreamed of and she's the trainer? Nope, they should be teaching her.

I think you'll be okay. Batman put her in charge of training the others for a reason. Dick isn't part of the actual team that was assembled, he was just around to help. Either way, no need to get upset about it.

@kiba: I was always bug that they tired to make her Batman's equal in the previous ongoing, when she really just another Batgirl.

I'm just expressing my dissatisfaction and disinterest in this character, her relationship with the other characters and the new level of batwank that's entered Gotham City. At least when Bruce solos the jla he's got a pretty awesome resume to back it up with, that's more than Kate can say.

@kiba: I see your point, but I think Batwoman should be able to train the other members because her own training was impressive. Remember she was taught by some of the best military men in the world, and prior to wanting to become Batwoman, Kate was also a good cadet.

Kate's Batwoman has been around for a decade, it's not like she's Duke or Harper. Plus, it's absurd to think that Batman shouldn't take advantage of having a large batfamily. His whole ideology is around ending crime and injustice in his city, how would he accomplish that with just himself and a Robin or two? Every person he trusts to be added to his family is like adding a whole new set of gadgets to his arsenal. You can't scoff at the writers for trying to go somewhere new after 75 years of Batman stories.

@laughingbatman: I'm not scoffing at anything other than than the wank Kate is receiving. I'm, more or less, okay with her character but she should be EARNING her place in the family the way Dick and Tim have instead of being a teacher for them. Look at what those two have done. Leading the Titans or the JLA for example. What has Kate done that compares? If you like her then cool but I'm gonna pass.

@elpizo: that's true but Dick and Tim were trained by Batman. And maybe it's the enlisted man in me but officers are mostly good at flying a desk with rare exception. There's a reason the guys in the military say there are few things more dangerous than a lieutenant with a compass.

Epting...yay, Snyder stooges...eh, I'll give it a shot but I'm not seeing any creative diversity. The Batline is pretty much a wannabe Snyder line. Even people like King and Orlando have become poor mens Snyder. The contrast between Monster Men(Snyder lite Orlando) and the new Midnighter series( actual Orlando) is that of night and day.

On few instances , it's as though her word is the final say- in a way that is outwitting batman. Does she deserve to be training the batfamily ? Seems like she is being written off as an equal to batman. However , I believe Tim Drake, and especially Dick, don't need her guidance. I am still picking up this batwoman book because I was a fan of he n52 run. Writers and artist has me sold

Batwoman training Nightwing? Lol, I think it should be the other way around. That said this might be an interesting book, and I will definitely check it out.

Oh, and see that, Marvel? Batwoman can get her own book without calling herself Batman... (*cough* "Thor" *cough*).

Anyway, hopefully the art/writing do this book justice.

I am ambivalent about a new series but still excited as well. I did enjoy a lot of the previous Batwoman comics and did pick up Detective Comes in the new Rebirth because she was a major character in it. I hope it will be good. DC has yet to disappoint with Rebirth in my opinion.

@kiba: I see what you're saying now. I think Batman put her in charge as if this was her own JLA/TT. Obviously not the same level or diversity as those leagues, but I think it's a way for writers to make her more prominent. But with Tim out of the picture for now and Dick most likely being out of the picture after Night of the Monster Men, she's left to train a team composed of Clayface, Spoiler, and Cassandra Cain. Maybe Duke will step in too. Not a very talented team without the former Robins. In no way do I think Batwoman should be on a pedestal, I just appreciate giving her a shot at being something than a B or C list character.

Took me a while to enjoy this version of Batwoman. I was really stuck on the fact that they were ignoring the Kathy Kane / Batwoman. But I enjoy this Batwoman now so I may be picking this up.

BUT - why are they continuing to not use Betty Kane / Flamebird??? As a fan of the Teen Titans and the original Bat-Girl, I don't see why she isn't part of the group in DETECTIVE.

@laughingbatman: and I can agree with all of that. Spoiler, clay face and Cass definitely can benefit from her just not Dick or Tim. And I agree that it's good that she's getting a chance to be more than some c list nobody. I think what bugs me most is that there is potential for her but I'm not happy with the execution. Like I wish they'd explain her relation to Bruce and Kathy and their alter egos as something more than a wild coincidence. But that's just me.

@kiba: In detective , theres an issue with a flashback sequence that depicted Kathy attending little Bruce parent funeral. I really enjoyed that part. It was a nice character development between both of them and you get to see how Kathy cared about Bruce. I definitely would like to see more of those character driven movements between them.

Tempting, but the way her last series ended... That Mr. Bones story left a real sour taste in my mouth.

Or not, and just cut down on anyone introduced in the new 52, like Blue Bird & that fake robin guy. ( Or in other words, any new pointless sidekick Snyder added. )
