Just read it. Has to be, it made Batman BADASS and it's way better than stuff like Hush, honestly that crap is overrated. TDKR (Returns not Rises) was the most badass Batman ever.

Is The Dark Knight Returns the best Batman graphic novel ever

It's one of them.

This.
Also I personally rank Year One over this...mostly because it does less to remind that Frank Miller is writing it...

I would rank TDKR over Year One.

No. Sure, it was the one to make Batman a threat again (and that's an excellent achivement), but there have been better Batman stories. In my opinion, The Killing Joke is the best.

@mr.obvious: Yeah, I liked The Killing Joke better also.
Best Joker story ever written, imo.
As great as TDKR is, and how much it changed the comic industry along with other books like Watchmen, Long Halloween is still probably the best Batman story arc ever written.

Killing Joke and DKR are way overrated.

No, personally, it's not even close to being one of the best. It's definitely a good one though.
TDKR is a great read and while "best" or not is a matter of opinion, I think it's certainly the most influential.

@comicdude23: NO its not... the best are year one, the long halloween, dark victory, hush, etc...
Year One was pretty lame. Batman Begins was a better origin story.

@comicdude23: for you! its such a nice story... how it all started
Batman Begins was a better origin story. Y1 IMO was good in the day but not now, I mean he couldn't handle S.W.A.T, Batman in the movies took an army of them.
@comicdude23: well, batman begins isnt a comic... how can you compare??? and the beauty in that is that a man is capable of great things, but has to start learning before...

I'm comparing the origins.
I really don't like Miller's take on Batman at all...he comes off as a psychopath when Miller writes him and that's not Batman to me

1) you do know this was written by the same guy who did the book your describing as the best
2) In the comics he didn't meet Ra's Al Ghul till years later (unlike in the movie) and in the early days he had too learn from his mistakes.
3) You can't really compare a film to a comic as they are written very differently thats why a lot of comics of films are rubbish
@johnkmccubbin91, I know he wrote DKR. He did a better job with DKR, but Batman wasn't a psychopath in Y1. That's why I felt it was simpler if he met him before he became Batman, I think Batman needs a good, new origin. Y1 is overrated.
@comicdude23: It's not just meant to be the origin of Batman in a lot of ways its not its his first year and he was leaning through experience plus it was also meant to be about the relationship between him and Gordon. Finally although some people find it over rated its a good story and paved the way for other great story an secondly Batman isn't meant to be a psychopathic like he was in DKR. Oh and the origin story is simple it has been forever his parents die and he later becomes Batman to avenge them and stop further acts like that happening
@comicdude23: If you're looking for a new origin story Detective Comics #0 out next month is going to be one I don't know about Batman #0 yet if it's going to be similar or not, I doubt it

TOtally agree. nevertheless, Year One batman isnt a psycho. thats why i liked it better than DKR
@johnkmccubbin91: agree, important stuff is that he meets gordon, not rah's

I understand! And I prefer Y1, dont care which one u prefer...
I like it. I'm not sure if it's the best, but then again i'm not sure what is the best batman graphic novel. I defiantly don't think its overrated as its a book i'll re-read along with the dark knight strikes again (its really not that bad). I like miller's batman. Still haven't got all-star batman and robin though as i refuse to buy it until i know that he second part will be released by DC (damn you jim lee for taking on so much work and not being able to finish what you commit too).
Personally my fav's are the monster men and also the mad monk. Also strange apparitions. Hush is majorly overrated. It's not as special as people make out in my opinion. Though it did give us jason todd back which led into under the red hood, which is brill. Its still just ok to me though. People might rave about jim lee, but his art is just ok, it's really getting tiresome on me now.
Oh I also think Killing joke is overrated. Not much but a little
