Since superstar artist David Finch made the jump to DC as an exclusive artist, we've only  seen covers from him. Great covers! But that's about it. We've seen a few interior pages (like in Batman #700) but not enough to satisfy (at least for me).

Today DC's The Source has announced that not only will Finch be drawing the interiors to a new Batman ongoing title, he will also be writing it. Batman: Dark Knight will be a new ongoing starting in November.

The good news is you won't have to wait until November to get a full David Finch issue. Finch will also be penciling Batman: The Return, a one-shot written by Grant Morrison which will kick start a "new era" for the Dark Knight and gives you a taste of what we can expect in November.

Do we need another Batman title? Finch commented on what his plans are.

The Dark Knight takes Batman outside what he knows, into a world of demonology, dark arts, and mystery. He’s the ultimate detective, faster, stronger and smarter than any villian, but now he faces creatures to whom logic and mortality don’t apply.

    Sound good to you?

I love his art, but I'm not a big fan of people doing both the writing and the art at the same time, not that because they are bad in anyone of those areas (which in truth I didn't even know he was a writer), but because it seems like with someone doing both, one or the other (and sometimes both all together) will start to loss it's momentum (if even gets any).

But from what Finch said, "Dark Arts?" Are we going to be seeing some Batman/Zatanna Team-Up's in the near future? :)

Sounds like a companion piece to Grant Morrison's from the premise it sounds like Batman Demon Hunter it seems like artists being able to write their own stories is an incetive for them at DC.

I know Knight and Squire was announced yesterday and this today and there are people complaining their are to many batbooks but it should be noted they all cover different grounds.

    books starring Bruce and Dick
     Batman
    Detective Comics
    Batman and Robin
Return of Bruce Wayne (soon will end)
    Streets of Gotham
    This Finch book

    books not starring Batman
    Red Robin
    Batgirl
    Gotham City Sirens
    Birds of Prey
    Azrael
soon Batwoman and Knight and Squire

    out of continuity books
    Batman Confidential
    Superman Batman
    Batman Odyssey
    Batman Widening Gyre (ending)
    Batman Earth One soon

So it's not like they all offer the same thing. Just thought I should point that out.

You beat me to the punch I was about to post the same thing. Yes there are a lot of Batman "world" titles but not that many that actually are solely about Batman. If this Dark Knight isn't in continuity we're only looking at 4 main Batman titles, but I love that they each portray a different aspect of the character. You get the main Batman, working with a partner in B&R, focusing on his detective work in Detective Comics, and I always thought SoG just told fun side stories (while some do tie into the main story arc)

    I like it that's all I'm saying :)

that's good news, definitely will be checking it and I'm actually jealous that Batman gets quite a few titles and Superman right now is stuck in like one only (speaking of continuity ones)

Another Batman title?  Ugh.  The idea sounds okay - it's a theme that will certainly fit the almost always darkly lit stories of Batman.  I just think they could do it all from one title... but then, I'm still patiently waiting for comics to go to the graphic novel format, so I often take a different view.  If people are buying the 4 that are already out, why not another one?

Marvel lost a very good artist and has guys like Greg Land and John Romita Jr at their major books, good job Marvel. We don't need another Batman title, how many does he have anyway? 3,4, Babs was perfectly right too much of a good thing.

There's no such thing as too much of a good thing, the more the better and all of you who have a problem with a character having too many books, no one is putting a gun to your head and making you buy them, don't buy them, don't read them, don't read about them don't even think about them and also I don't care about this book, I'm not a Batman fan.

Also it should be said that DC is number two in the comic industry they want to be number one and Batman sells enough and is popular enough to justify to DC that there should be more than one book Green Lantern sells and that's why there are three books and an event based on it.

If other characters sold as much then they would have more than one title as well but if people are upset that there are to many then they should be reminded that there are many books because people are buying them DC will listen to money if certain characters feel neglected to fans then it's the low sales that are to blame.

I love Finch's work, haven't seen him write before, so I can't judge on that. I couldn't care less about there being too many Batman books, because no one is forcing you to read about him; unlike Marvel does with some of their characters being on every team.

Sounds like we have Bruce's book.  Maybe?  Much like Steve is Super Solider, Bruce will be Dark Knight.  Many books centered on batman allows for niche selling.  Too much? Only if you have to buy them all but I say only buy what you like a la carte.  Grant's run on Batman and Robin will be ending too, or so he indicated in an interview a while back.  i don't think the book will continue once he is done with his story.  This will fill that gap.  thoughts?

I used to think it was Batman, but then i thought it was Batman and Robin... now I'm confused.

Am sure the art will be superb just like Odyssey. Hopefully, unlike Adams, Finch can actually write a coherent tale.

Calling it The Dark Knight does not fit with the premise, though.

So not only another Bat title but he's not a crime fighter he's a paranormal investigator?
    This isn't Batman.
    I'm out.
Even the recent storylines haven't had enough actual crime stories or detective work for my taste.

I guess it makes sense to explore the Batman mythos through demonology and mysticism, since his persona is based on superstition. However, what will the Batman "myth" do to scare the actual demons that reside in the spiritual world? Can he scare the actual boogey-man with his costume, or is he really more than the outfit?  It's a metaphysical question, how much of Batman is the Bat that he embodies? I hope they ask this question and explore it while writing these stories.

Love Finch's art, I'll see how he does as a writer tomorrow. If tony Daniel can "write" batman, then  I'm sure Finchy can do well enough. Well enough to warrant the $4 for the first two issues? We shall see. If it's up to snuff I'll drop the main Batman title.
