     10 cents to 400 grand is an even bigger leap than the one Bats is making here.
     10 cents to 400 grand is an even bigger leap than the one Bats is making here.

    Ladies and gentlemen of the Comic Vine community, I present to you one of those very rare occasions where a fan’s comics collection might actually able to put his kids through college. Comic Vine's received a press release from Dallas today alerting us to Heritage’s upcoming Comics and Comics Art Auction, which will be putting the “Aloha” copy of DETECTIVE COMICS #27 up for bids. Graded VF-7.5 by the CGC, this first appearance of Batman is expected to sell for more than $400,000.

    Before I tell you all the details, I want you to read this below…

    “One day I went to a bookstore and the owner had just gotten it in… I went to the bank and pretty well emptied my savings. This was about 90% of all the savings I had put away from working part-time since eighth grade. I give my father credit – in most cases, parents would have asked ‘are you crazy?’ But my dad just said, ‘it’s your money,’ and my friends just shook their heads. They couldn’t believe it.”

    Those are the words of the auction’s anonymous consigner, who was a college student when he bought the comic for $1,200 in '74 (it's being called the “Aloha” copy because he got it in Honolulu.) If his copy does end up selling for what Heritage is hoping for, that would be a 30,000% return on his investment - - a return he plans to spend on his son’s college education. == TEASER ==

    I’m getting a special amusement out of this because I actually wrote a paper about the speculator market’s boom and bust in the 90s. Basically, the story I got from interviewing a half-dozen comic shop owners was buyers who horded copies of, say, SPAWN #1 or YOUNGBLOOD #1 back in the day, were now coming back to stores and getting quite frustrated upon being told that their copies would only be going to quarter bins. In the managers' words, “They were pretty pissed that their collections wouldn't put their kids through college.”

    You might remember that DETECTIVE COMICS #27 was jockeying with ACTION COMICS #1 for the most expensive comics position earlier this year - - that's what even gave this anonymous consignor the idea to put his copy up. See, the only comics that'll ever get you returns like this are from the Golden and Silver Age, because they were usually thrown out and, thus, are quite rare now. So kudos to this anonymous consignor for living the dream.

    Damn, I know that I should buy it earlier!
    And I also wonder if someday Ghost Rider comic books would have this value.

    Batman appeared in issue 27? Shouldn't he first appear in issue 1? Who else appeared in the rest of the issues, 1-26 then?

    I started seriously collecting comic books about 2 years ago.  Up to then I had some from when I was a child.  Now I buy up any and all first appearances I can get my hands on.  With comic book movies making comic characters mainstream, it is only a matter of time before these characters will make an appearance on the silver screen.    Also with companies like CGC you get that impartial grading service which is a big plus.

    @The Impersonator:
    I believe at this point Detective Comics was just a book to showcase different characters. It wasnt always Batman's title. Thats why they gave him his own. I have no clue who was in the stories prior to this.

    @The Impersonator: Detectives mostly starred in Detective Comics before Batman. They were Bruce Nelson (the original Bruce lol), Buck Mashall, Cosmo, Slam Bradley (& his partner, Shorty), & Speed Saunders. There was a govt spy named Bart Regan who had a spy wife Sally Norris. A P.I. named Larry Steele. A DA named Steve Malone. One of the first supervillains appeared before Batman his name was Doctor Fu Manchu. There were also some masked heroes like Wing & Crimson Avenger who had no superpowers. Then Batman came along...

    These old comics didn't just get "thrown out."  Many of them disappeared in the paper drives of World War II.  That's a zero chance of ever finding these in a junk pile somewhere. ;)
