StrongProtector's Batman Incorporated #5 - Masterspy review

    One Country at a Time

Batman and Gaucho pair up with Batwoman and The Hood in order to stop an insane scheme by Dr. Dedalus that threatens to bring the civilized world to its knees.

    The Good

Grant Morrison continues to weave a complicated and thrilling web over Batman lore as he introduces new villains and schemes while continuing to expand the Batman, Incorporated franchise. Dr. Dedalus is proving to be another major threat for Batman as it is revealed that he is a character who will play both sides of the fence in order to achieve his end goals.

In this one issue, we also saw several new candidates for the Batman, Inc. franchise with Gaucho all but being initiated for Argentina, The Hood possibly for England, and a new unknown Batman in Africa who will likely be expanded upon in future issues.

Couple all this with some great action highlighted with an awesome fight scene with Scorpiana against The Hood, Gaucho, and Batwoman and this book entertains from beginning to end.

    The Bad

With all this world traveling and new characters being constantly introduced or re-introduced after long hiatuses, it’s sometimes hard to keep track of just which way the comic is going. Combine that with a lot of flashbacks to help flesh out the character of Dr. Dedalus and long speeches between characters we haven’t seen in a while to get us up to speed on who they are, and this Batman, Inc. arc is a little tough to follow at times.

Also, even though Dr. Dedalus has a lot of ties to Batman’s past according to his story, he feels a bit like a Ra's al Ghul clone and hasn’t done anything to prove to be very memorable as of yet. He comes off as just another megalomaniac who wants to destroy the world.

    The Verdict

Batman, Inc. is something you have to keep following because it is surely building up to something beyond huge for the Dark Knight. Although I prefer to see Batman work alone most times or just within the Bat Family, this comic does a good job of making sure that Batman doesn’t lose sight of his goal and see this devolve into a less campy Brave and the Bold series of team-ups every issue.

A little difficult to follow at times, the elaborate plot and great action are more than enough to keep your attention for the long haul as we’ll hopefully start to see just what Batman, Inc. can really evolve into in the coming issues.

I felt that this issue had no ending. Batman of Africa busted in the 'school' and then boom Arkham City preview. I was left confused and wanting. I was also surprised that they didn't end it with their regular Batman TV show type ending.

@blur1528: I think the Batman of Africa, which bothers me a little that's his title right now because here you have all these Batmen in individual countries and here this guy gets an entire continent, anyway, I think it is a tease for the next issue. Think of it as what they used to do in the 3rd season of the Adam West Batman TV show instead of the first two which were "same bat-time, same bat-channel".

Haha, alright I will. And for his title how about the Batman of Uganda or is that in bad taste? I feel like it is. I'm sorry.

OK my pages were stuck together between the Arkham City ad and the actual preview. Just read the page Bruce is on and it now has an ending. I take back what I said.

Has anyone read the story "The Batman that nobody knows!"? This story is about kids around a camp fire telling different interpretations of Batman one boy imgaines Batman as an African American man in a jet pack with antennas on his head he looks like he is the inspiration for this new Batman like character named David.

I do not know if not getting a revolution is a problem really the story is aimed at two years and Morrison really stretches his stories an answer to a question will come in a issue six months later. In this storyline we saw the connection between Leviathan and Doctor Dedalus, Leviathan taking the world and The Hood infiltrating Batman Incorporated.

I havent really been paying much attention to Batman Inc. because of all the cliche new characters and I also suspect something big coming from this but at the moment its been a little boring. This was the first goodish issue for me with this series.

I think you may have exaggerated a bit with the "awesome" fight where Scorpiana fought Batwoman, Gaucho & The Hood. SPOILER: It was literally 2 pages long and Gaucho & The Hood just stood there and when they tried to grab her she broke free and got punched so hard her metal headgear broke by Batwoman.

After 2 previous issues where we knew this was going to happen I had my hopes up but it wasn't even on-par with Batwoman taking out the fake one in the previous issue. And I must say that overall the fighting was much watered down.

Don't get me wrong I respect your opinion about the comic I just think that, compared to the previous issues, this one wasn't as good.

Other than that they're both scheming masterminds who front a criminal organisation with the goal of destroying civilisation, I don't really get the Ra's comparison. By that logic any number of baddies in all media could be conflated . Ra's is a totally different type to Dedalus. He's honorable, noble and straightforward in his aims, whereas as on the evidence so far Dedalus is treacherous, evil and machiavellian. And then there's tone. The two couldn't *feel* more different if they tried. Dedalus with his nazi backstory, cloak of smoke and occult stylings bears no textual, visual or thematic similarites to the stately orientalist fantasy that is Ra's.

Dedalus represents a hearkening back to the globe trotting bat-spy stories of the seventies, sure, but he's hardly the only element of Batman Inc that does that.

I really enjoyed that fight too. Firstly because showcasing women being badass is another example of Grant's commitment to diversity in the DCU. Secondly because for a punch up it contains a lot of character: Scorpiana's wriggling, insectoid, lethal slipperiness, her maximising of every possible opportunity to *sting* and Batwoman's hardcore, utilitarian, militaristic combat style. And, thirdly, the coup de grace that puts an end to it - the way Batwoman's kick surprises us as much as it does her foe, devastating in its split second precision.

And, yeah, all this in two pages.

    @asterion:
You mean like the "Superboy Punch"? Yeah... Scorpina managed to take out Nightwing with help, yet a freshman in the Bat-pajamas takes her out with 1 single kick. Lousy. Take a look at issue 4 where you see how much she tried to capture an impostor Batwoman. It was way out of character. What's next she's gonna kick the villain through a building? It was greatly exaggerated.
If you want to watch female fighting you should pick up Birds of Prey especially the first series which is great fun to read and revolves around an female hero team.

Batman: Incorporated #5 Okay I'd like to start off by saying that I didn't read the issue before this so if I have any wrong information please forgive me because I just kinda jumped back into this series and not to mention this issue confused the hell out of me but I think I may have the main idea. Okay so The Hood, Batwoman, El Guacho and Batman are working together to take down this insane doctor Deadalus. The first run into an A-list assassin named Scorpiana. Batwoman takes her down. Later B...

The only flaw to reading Grant Morrison's Batman monthly is that the pieces to the puzzle come slowly, but surely.   There is a great advantage to rereading Morrison's Batman in trade, which I do recommend, since he has really brought back the "Detective Comics" dealing with Batman. The arc that started in issue #3 is still panning out till now, Bruce and Gaucho don't make as much impact as they could of in this issue, since this issue was more about The oroboro that Morrison is slowly explaining...
