One of the best and most underrated issues I've ever read
With a spectacular focus on Captain America's goofy past attempt at comics and strong, emotional similarilty between him and Spider-man, Avenging Spiderman #5 stands out to be the single best solo issue I've read all year.
The Good:
What isn't good about this issue? The writing is absolutely top notch, the art is absolutely fantastic and the characters have never been written better. How can anyone not be absolutely blown away by this fantastic issue. it begins with a reading of one of Cap's old comics that he wrote and drew as a child of super-hero trying to support the war effort. Spider-man, along with Spider-woman, Hawkeye and Wolverine find this amusing seeing as Cap turned out to be the hero that the world needed during the dark war times.
Peter spends the majority of the issue trying to resonate with Cap seeing as they both used to be nerds in one or another. Cap tries his best to play it nice, spending his whole time focusing on the mission and trying to ignore Spidey's non-stop jabbering. This leads to Cap flat-out telling Peter to grow up, that he doesn't "play around" anymore and this emotionally strikes Peter hard.
The emotional aspect of this issue is beautifully played out and tugs a little at the heart strings as Cap and Peter try to resonate together over their past hobbies and what connects them. All the while, it is all spectacularly expressed through the absolutely stunning art of Leinil Francis Yu. This issue boasts easily the best art he's ever drawn, it's just that good.
The Bad:
Absolutely nothing. There are no slow points, every moment keeps you begging for more and you wish that each issue could be this good.
Verdict:
Whether you have been keeping up with Avenging Spiderman or not, this issue should not be missed out on by anyone who is a fan of Spider-man or Captain America. It's one of the best issues of this year so far and it's easily worth the extra dollar.
