This is easily my favorite title out right now (and my favorite that's hit the shelfs in a long time. It doesn't hurt that I'm a huge Hyperion fan and finally get to see him in 616 continuity.........
Avengers
Team » Avengers appears in 7703 issues.
The Avengers are Earth's mightiest heroes and foremost super-team... "There came a day, a day unlike any other, when Earth's mightiest heroes found themselves united against a common threat. On that day, the Avengers were born - to fight the foes no single super hero could withstand! Heed the call, then - for now, the Avengers Assemble!"
Why You Should Be Reading The Current AVENGERS Series
I don't often agree disagree with you guys, but much like Secret Avengers under Remender, this series isn't pulling me in at all. Having entered the comics world under Mighty and New Avengers from about 6-7 years ago, I prefer my stories to be more along the Bendis/Ellis runs. I am dropping my sub to this one this week.
I read the first 3 and I couldn't really get into it. I just wasn't digging the story so I dropped it from my pull list. I think New Avengers is awesome, though. It's one of my favorites and Hickman is doing a great job even if it is a little slow starting. I'm glad Black Panther finally has a book where he's in the spotlight because he's one of my favorite characters.
The Avengers i've been wanting all along, a fresh mythos and the start of something special and epic.
@Jonny_Anonymous: I've said this three times now; I've read the first arc of Avengers, just not his Fantastic Four run
Crap! I had consiously decided not to buy this book because I'm already bankrupt as it is ($$$)... Sara, you just made me want to read it!!

What about all the other stuff he has written?
The first trade of the avengers, Avengers World, comes out in April, so Ill get it then. I trade wait stuff because I cant afford single issues and I dont want to do digital.
From what I understand about this series so far, is that Hickman is slowly turning the Avengers into the Legion of Super-Heroes in all but name. Hickman's a legion fan, as am I, so I can see the Parallels. Hyperion is Superman, obviously. Smasher is Ultra Boy. Cannonball and Sunspot are Wildfire and Sun Boy. Shang-chi is Karate Kid (even though karate and kung fu aren't the same thing, but whatever).
The size of the team, 24 avengers to 25-26 Legionairres in the 80's. the cosmic setting. It wouldn't surprise me if the upcoming Thanos event was inspired by the Great Darkness Saga, one of the best Darkseid stories out there.
That might be a little off-putting to some people, but for me it sounds great.
Uncanny Avengers is the highlight of the new line of A books. Hickman's haven't grabbed me yet.
His work on Avengers so far is frankly kind of boring, lacking the human warmth and interaction that make these ensemble books fly.
And concentrating on two characters blatantly ripped off from DC doesn't help either. Marvel works best with more limited and grounded heroes.
I agree with everything in this article. I honestly think the concept of having a BIG roster was gonna fail, but Hickman's formula is written in an amazing way. I like how each issue or arc may focus on different members on the Avengers team. Its smart not to constantly highlight the main guys like Cap or Iron Man all the time because we know they will always be in comics. This series is one of my top 3 Marvel books out now.
@Yung ANcient One: Uncanny is basically an Avengers sub-team designed by Cap to show the group's support for mutants, and so features a mix of Avengers (Thor, Cap, Scarlet Witch) and X-people (Havok, Wolverine, Rogue), with Havok as the leader. Apparently Wasp, Sunfire, and Wonderman join soon.
Plot thus far seems to run separate from the main Avengers books, and has more of a classic Avengers feel in my opinion.

Why you should be reading Avengers? Because you're a moron.

I am still unsure how I feel about it. I wasn't a big fan of Bendis' run. So a change of pace will be nice. I guess I was just hoping it would have a more classic feel to it.
Hey Babs! Nice review
I was beyond ready for a new voice on the Avengers and was really amped up after reading the first issue. I was hooked the moment I saw Hyperion, Captain Universe and Smasher joining the ranks.
Just the sheer power that was added to the team was amazing, so I was looking forward to what Hickman does from here.
However the biggest issue I had was, the art. Some points it is just FANTASTIC but other parts you loose some information. I have been reading comics for over 20 years and I was hard pressed to identify the roster because the figures where so hard to make out.
Not sure if this was ton purpose, or not but I am sure most would agree having the icons placed over the proper characters is a huge assistance to figuring out who is who.
For example, it wasn't until he was in action did I realize that Shang-Chi joined the team ( AWESOME..!!) and certainly his icon was confusing as well.
Overall a simple nitpicky gripe to a otherwise excellent return to greatness for Earth's Mightiest Heroes!!

Seriously! And if you're going to criticize then for the love of God have some tact.
I just hope when he uses Ms. Marvel/Captain Marvel he uses her proper abilities and strength rather than hardly anything as the writer of her current title seems to be leaning towards.
i really like avengers but new avengers takes the cake for me it is amazing.
well both these titles are marvel now! has done allot for marvel they are actually worth getting now
I just read issue #5, wasn't expecting much but Im glad to know I was wrong. This book is getting better for me
its one of best titles because it doesn't seem to have disneys heavy hand in its creation,
Its just hickman doing what he wants
@TheHeat: That's Captain Universe. It's a form of cosmic energy that targets random people for a specific heroic purpose. Spider Man was only one of many Captain Universes.
THIS!! I'm liking Uncanny Avengers too.Avengers is good, New Avengers is great. Read both series together, even better.
i havent gotten these because it's too frequent of a whole in my wallet. but after this article, i think i'm gonna get these. i love the Avengers and I love Hickman
Your praise each week one comes out gets me close and closer to picking it up! Though I don't have room for a $3.99 book unless I get rid of another...I'm currently reading Daredevil, Captain Marvel, Hawkeye, FF, Scarlet Spider, Batman, Batwoman, Wonder Woman and Talon and I don't want to get rid of any of them!
this title is sick, the Avengers Army is so awesome, love cannonball joining the team
the new Avengers title is also sick, the fact that both of them have interlocking themes= AMAZING
for anyone that doesnt know what im talking about check out New Avengers 1 then read Avengers 4 with Hyperions story and look for similarities.
Personally I don't care for characters like Hyperion, Smasher, and Captain Universe as I feel others like Blue Marvel would have been better picks for this roster. But overall this series has been good so far and I'm looking forward to what stories we have to look forward to.
Also, and while I understand it's Cap's way of including more Mutants within the ranks of the Avengers, I do still think Cannonball and Sunspot have no reason being on this team. While I haven't yet read issue five, so far they really haven't brought anything to the team and it feels that Marvel simply threw them in to bring in the X-Men fans. The team already has Wolverine, I just don't see why these two are needed.

Also. @Babs seems a bit dismissive of New Avengers. For some contrasting points about NA:
1. The team did leave the table in the last issue. And then they did the most epic, world shaking thing seen in a marvel comic since the end of AvsX.
2. They went back to the table because now they're going to have to top what they did in my first point, possibly several mores times before dinner.
3.This is just the beginning.
To sum it up with some opinionated statements, New Avengers is a book about Marvel's Illuminati. The same dudes that caused planet hulk then world war hulk, by sitting down at a table. When me and my friend nick sit down at a table we're probably gonna eat some hot pockets. When these guys sit down at a table, the universe is an hour away from destruction give or take 59 minutes. So slow pacing might be a good thing in this case.
