ComicBookMovie recently reported that Black Widow won't be the only female character in the upcoming 2012 Avengers film, at least according to director Joss Whedon: "It is true that the movie is only going to have one female avenger.. But she will not be the only female character" This opens the door pretty wide to speculation. Could we see Gwyneth Paltrow reprise her role as Pepper Potts? Will someone step in to play Bruce Banner's love interest, Betty Ross? Or will the fans see a female of the villain variety?
A few people are a little worried, since a few characters that weren't original Avengers comics. Whedon explained where this story came from to ease the minds of fans a little more. "It will be a new story that has many things from different arcs of the comics in it. There is no one Avengers story that you can just do the way that you can do the origin of Spider-Man. You really have to cull from the original and The Ultimates, which is one of The Avengers titles." So expect to see more than Loki using a false image of Hulk to terrorize the city, much like in the first issue of the Avengers comic 40 years ago.
There's a lot of great Avengers stories out there, since the book has been around for so long, even if you include the Ultimate universe into the equation. The set-up for the teams is all in the other films: Iron Man 2, Incredible Hulk, and I'm sure we'll get some of that in Captain America and Thor. So, when it comes down to the actual Avengers film, we'll probably see the team just get down to the nitty-gritty, and a limited amount of set-up. So with a story that doesn't exactly follow the original comics, what would you like to see and who do you think the other female character in the film is? Enchantress? Hela? Pepper Potts? Betty Ross? Or someone else?
