AVX#9. A good issue
The Good:
I have a confession I want to make. . . I'm enjoying AVX. I know a lot of people aren't but I'm finding it leaps and bounds better than Secret Invasion and Fear Itself. Sure it's a dumb summer blockbuster but that's what makes it enjoyable. Now this issue is probably my favoirite out of all of the AVX issues so far. The Avengers are at the end of their rope, they have little to no hope of defeating the rest of the Phoenix 5, Thor gets captured and they lose their powerhouse that could fight the enemy. But that's what makes this issue so good, the stakes are high, they are down and out of luck and could be wiped out at any moment. Kubert's art is so much better than JRJR. I tried to go back and reread the beginning of the series the other day and it was jarring to look at.
This issue is basically Spider-man's story, which is why this story works so well, he's so used to down and out. I really like what Marvel is doing with Peter, they are making him step up and become a major hero in the Marvel Universe.
The Bad:
Quick spoiler here so don't read the crossed-out text. The way Peter defeats Colossus and Magik by tricking them to infighting felt very rushed. It felt like editorial needed the two of them out of the way now that the end of the event is approaching.
Verdict:
4/5
AVX is a big summer blockbuster not a major narrative masterpiece. I feel like people are expecting more from it than what should be. It's supposed to be more Transformers: Dark of the Moon and less Schindler's List. I'm enjoying it as that and i found myself disappointed that I had to wait 2 weeks for the next issue
