A Book That's Taking Risks
Anyone who thinks this represents everything wrong with comics either hasn't read enough comics or has their views shaped by the internet personality Linkara, who is a vocal opponent of character death. This book is taking risks and I for one intend to reward those risks if they pay off. The setup was incredible, Arcade grabs 16 random teenage superheroes and basically says, "Kill or be killed kids" There's a lot of potential in this. Dennis Hopeless being a former writer for the 90's X-Men Animated series makes me hopeful that the writing on it's worst day will at least be serviceable, and Kev Walker being one of my favorite artists makes this a real treat for me. And having three of my favorite characters here (X-23, Nico, and Chase) really helps. I love these characters, I don't wanna see em die,and if they do the emotional impact will be felt provided Hopeless does it right. (Which I'm confident he will) And hey even if they do die there's always a chance they'll come back. Nothing in comics lasts forever. So I'm gonna see this series to the end.
Now if I do have one thing I had a problem, it's the opening of the book. It spoils who the last two survivors will be, while it doesn't completely ruin it, it does take a lot of the tension away.
