    Avengers Academy #32 Review

    Avengers Academy #32 Review

    Overview:

Phoenix Emma comes to the Academy to destroy the Sentinel, it does not go smoothly.

    The Good:

I’ll admit I had my doubts about the Phoenix Five and how they would be handled by the people on the receiving end of their action after reading AvX 6 and The best part about this issue is that the Academy, a bunch of kids (plus Ant Man), stand up to them. This is another X-23 intensive issue since she is a mutant living with the Avengers and that is awesome, seeing her stick to her convictions in the face of Phoenix Emma is really cool. This issue really reminded me why she is my favorite character in the Marvel Universe.

Christos Gage once again knocks it out of the park with writing again. Hazmat, even though she only has a few lines really stands out. He is also able to capture the spirit of Marjorie Liu’s run on X-23 and makes very direct parallels to what X-23 went through in the series and it is really nice to see a writer draw so heavily from another one instead of ignoring or twisting it to fit their own needs. This issue also brings Juston Seyfert to the forefront with his Sentinel; since he was primarily a background character before it is really nice to see him become a legitimate character with his own personality.

Timothy Green III’s art is good; it is different from Tom Grummett’s but it pretty good.

    The Bad:

With a heavy focus on X-23 and Juston the rest of the cast doesn’t really have much panel time. Hazmat makes the most of hers and White Tiger reveals an interesting fact but other than that the other students aren’t there much. Gage still makes it work but anyone who is a fan of seeing the whole cast work together will be disappointed.

There is also a panel in where Striker runs up to X-23 and Hazmat to tell them some news. In the panel, the words he speaks convey fear and worry but his face is drawn angry, it is not a big deal but causes a double take.

    Verdict:

A god X-23 story and seeing Juston’s character be developed is really cool. The writing is amazing while the art is good; this combines to make a great issue that is once again a great tie-in while still focusing on the regular characters of the book not being crazy.

This was one stupid story, imo.

So, Emma, a Omega-level mutant that shapes reality, is really going house-by-house destroying sentinels? If that wasnt stupid enough, she shouldn't have to spend more then a milisecond to paralize everyone on that place and destroy the thing. The part where she "takes her time to destroy the sentinel" is also especially idiotic. We already know from Scott that it's not how the Phoenix FOrce works. Jesus...

Laura has had one thousand epifanies now, and everytime she reaches conclusions, it never brings up change. She is like Wolverine in that regard, the writers are afraid of going forward with her. The Sentinel being compared to her dog, that was good at first, but then suddenly she has a change of heart because the kid is crying? It is just a robot, and it's just a kid. Just like all kids that she left behind in Utopia.

    This was a mess.

@Tchokes: Well as a huge X-23 fan and as someone who has been enjoying AvX, I thought it was good. Also writers are not afraid of going forward with X-23, Marjorie Liu's series was a great step forward from the character, and this issue draws heavily from what she went through during it, so if you didn't read the series, it would make less sense than if you did. Most of the epiphanies were ideas she came up with or struggled with during the series and she was trying to draw parallels between her life and the others because she is trying to be friends with them.

I read all of Marjorie Liu's stories, and it was slow as hell. Even worse, it took Laura from being a down-to-earth heroine to going cosmic, which was... pathetic to say at best.

@Tchokes: Emma has suffered a lot at the hands of the Sentinels and lost many students to them. We were talking about it on another site and apparently her original Hellions students were killed by them in addition to the Genoshan massacre she was traumatized by? Maybe she's going door-to-door because she wants the satisfaction of destroying the things herself, in person. When Emma kills, it's up close and personal, like when she shot her sister.

@Tchokes: Laura went cosmic before, she was the host for Captain Universe and it was pretty cool. Liu's story was character driven which was exactly what Laura needed. Just because something is not constant action does not make it bad.

I am completely against constant action. The best thing out of AvX was Cyclops ramblings on the moon.

Also, on that same rambling, Cyclops revealed that the Phoenix had a way of making things very small in comparison to it, things like revenge and whatnot. So Emma's revenge makes no sense. Also, her students, I THINK, were not killed by sentinels, but thats beside the point.
