She is broken...
Although this 6th issue of the series deals with what the two previous issues dealt with (the origin of a lesser known character), the formula to it is quite different. Instead of having the story of the hero, in this case Captain universe, directly shown to us, we get to see her origin trough her introspection. Aided by Shang-Chi (I personally love that character), Captain Universe's host (Tamara Devoux) goes trough her mind to find the answers of her own origin story; of what happened to her all those years ago. What we get is a beautifully tragic story of a common lady who becomes the mother of the universe. At a certain point, Captain universe herself (not the host) affirms something big that will be an important piece to the story Hickman is building (probably a link to the other Avengers series, New avengers). Again, another piece to the puzzle has been added, so one time I say this: we have to be patient to see everything unravel.
Different from the last two issues, we don't get an adventure story concentrating on several other Avengers. Instead, we get to see some interesting interactions between characters such as Cannonball, Sunspot, the Superior Spider-Man, Iron man and even the new Adam. These interactions added fun to the heavy story we have here.
On top of that, Adam Kubert's art here is amazing. The images concerning Captain Universe's host story are incredibly well made. But the real treat here is the art concerning Captain Universe herself that is incredible. The art combined with the beautiful colors by Frank Martin make some panels a joy to watch. Just the image of Captain Universe in the stars was truly beautiful.
The bad:
I'll say it again, although I know it won't be a factor in the future issues, this issue didn't expose a lot of the characters. It was focused on one in particular and left the rest as if they were less important. Again, this is to place key plot points throughout the story.
So what's the verdict?
This series, along with it's counterpart New Avengers, is just amazing. We get to see new characters that each have a role alongside our familiar characters in the story created by Johnathan Hickman and several talented artists such as Adam Kubert. The origin story in this issue was well made and showed how Tamara Devoux story is one that is tragic. And to top it all off, the cliffhanger at the end showed how things are heating up in this series, hopefully, for the next issue.
