    Avengers don't bother

I want to love this comic. Why? Because I am a traditionalist in that the Avengers is the "main Marvel group" and they represent the most interesting characters Marvel Universe has to offer. I mean, in the ideal world, of course. In reality, this series (albeit, we are only on issue #3) is pretty rotten.

It seems that almost universally people are disliking the art. And I can understand that. Frames seem cluttered and random. The faces of the characters are unique to "Junior." In other words, this isn't Alex Ross-style art. Its "different." Okay, and sometimes different is good. Overall, though, this stuff isn't appealing to me.

The story has potential. And Bendis has been pushed by Marvel as if he were one of the best in their House. I am sure he's done a fine job with other stories. But these issues have sucked. Issue number 3, in particular, has been ridiculous. Its random, its confusing, its choppy. I feel like Bendis isn't able to hold the reins on so many big-name characters all at once. I read it twice and really didn't know what was going on and I cannot say that I really cared. I want to like the story. But the writing just ain't good.

I blame the rating "change." This title is rated A. I guess some of the creators took this to mean that they had to dumb-down and over-action the whole thing. When I read it, I cannot pick out one single wrong element; the whole book just has an odd and icky feel to it. The thing is, this is not Moon Knight or Spider-Girl. This is AVENGERS... and no matter the rating, it needs to be awesome.

John Romita Jr. is killing this book... 0

I want to like Avengers, I REALLY do. The story that Bendis is trying to tell is a good one, and there's some genuinely great moments in this book, like the brief moment of banter between Noh-Varr and Spider-Man. From a storytelling perspective, this book is great, if a little bit cluttered. The problem lies with the ugly, ugly artwork of John Romita Jr. It's like he's not even trying anymore. The first issue was okay, the second issue was bad, and this third issue set new standards for the word...

The Avengers Have Seen Better Days Than This 0

In this issue, time continues to rupture even further as the Avengers face off against another timeline's Apocalypse and his Horsemen. Plot progression takes a break to make way for an action-packed issue, but both the writing and the art fail to fully deliver.  This is not to say nothing good is to be found here. As usual, Brian Michael Bendis writes a good Tony Stark. The quips may be a little overdone, but Stark remains as cunning and intelligent as ever. It's clear from Stark's reaction to S...
