"There's beer on the plane Logan." 0

Apparently the Heroic Age is here, even though the X-Men are stationed in their old base in San Francisco, so really this is pre-Utopia.    What You Need to Know. This is a 5-issue limited series, focusing on the Astonishing X-Men.  Warren Ellis writes and Kaare Andrews draws.    The Good.  The story actually wasn't that bad, even though it's completely out of continuity.   The Interaction between Scott and Storm is at least mildly entertaining.    The Bad. The Women in this issue are drawn and ...

    Review: Astonishing X-Men: Xenogenesis #1 0

After a puzzling rash of "mutant births" in Mbangawi, the X-Men go to investigate. But they're in store for a thick net of political intrigue.  The Good There are some good quips here, particularly the line about the "20-year-old condom" and all the jokes about Cyclops' general dweebiness.  Andrews brings great storytelling and an unusual style that really gives the X-Men a fresh look (and that's combined with D'Amarta's colors). You also have to tip your hat to Ellis,...

    Africa Isn't a Country? 0

I was really looking forward to this book.   I just finished the current Astonishing X-Men run that started with Joss Whedon’s stories, so I had high hopes for this.   It did not live up to those expectations. First of all, I did not care for the art.   In some panels, the characters just look terrible.   Emma in particular is drawn almost as a caricature, accentuating her breasts in literally every panel that she is in.   In fact, sometimes her breasts are the only part of her in the panel.   H...

    A Potentially Astonishing Mess 0

The Good -I must admit, I’ve never heard of Kaare Andrews. While reading this issue, I found myself having some of the same thoughts about the art that I did while reading through Morrison’s New X-Men run. Initially, I wasn’t a fan of Quitely’s art either. I could see some of Andrews’ art growing on me as I see more, but not without some changes (mentioned below). -I’m interested to see where this story goes. Are these babies in Africa really mutants? If not, just what are they? Who or what led ...

    Astonishingly Average 0

I got to go into the city today, so I picked up a few more books that I didn't have time to get the other day, Xenogenesis was one of them.  First of all, I love Whedon's Astonishing run, and Ellis' run has had its up and downs. Anyway, on to this issue.   The art, as many have said, is somewhat jarring. Emma and Storm are both sporting looks that are...unique, to say the least. The male characters are solid enough, but there is certainly something off about the females. I'm not sure if it's jus...

My lowest rating for an X-book EVER! 0

Astonishing X-Men: Xenogenesis #1 of 5 I don’t even know where to begin with this issue.   I guess I’ll start with the cover.   I have to say that I really, really don’t care for Kaare Andrews’ rendition of Marvel’s famous mutants.   I never thought I would see a trashy looking Emma Frost.   I mean sure she dresses a little risqué, but the shape and the face that Andrews uses make her look like a run through Fergy and Paris Hilton xenomorph.   I thought she looked bad enough on the cover but And...

Passable if your not a fan of the x-men 1

Let me just say that o though that this issue was ok, not great just ok.  Unlike Ellis' writing on the 'true' Astonishing X-Men book, some of the characters here seemed to be a little off like for example Emma Frost in sections of this book she was believable however, in others she just seemed like an annoying teenager  with lines like "No shops, No room service within a thousand miles...I just don't see the appeal"  to me like i said this was just not Emma at all.  Yet, i found the line "unhand...

    Trip to Africa 0

The Story - In a small village in Mbangawi there´s a weird thing going on: an off the scale birth rate and the babies, the instant they are delivered, have powers, probably mutants, so Ororo asks the X-Men to investigate, after a quick briefing with T´Chala (A.K.A Black Panther).   The Good - I´m a big fan of Warren Ellis, he writes very easily, creates a good and chill atmosphere (like the little briefing of The X-Men in the kitchen, Ororo wearing only toils, everybody drinking coffee and Logan...

    Astonishing X-Men Xenogenesis Issue 1 0

Once upon a time there was a boy who picked up a book called Astonishing X-Men by Joss Whedon and John Cassidy. That boy quickly fell in love with the fun characters, beautiful art, and sense that this mattered, that this book would have an impact more than most others. That boy was right. Years later, the boy grew into a man, and saw that once more there would be a new Astonishing X-Men, something that excited him so, as it appeared that the team would be boldy reimagined and made great once mo...

An Amalgam of Many Good, yet so Many More Bad, Things 2

Ugh! This issue drives me insane. The ironic thing is, it's not just the fact that it's bad that drives me insane; it's that the issue has quite a few (very) good things going for it, but they all get dragged down by a poor plot with (mostly) off-key characterization and some quite appalling script choices. Let's take a closer look at this, the first issue of the Astonishing X-Men 2010 volume.  What was good? Storm! Holy cow. Let me just get this out of the way: I think that Kaarre Andrews' depi...
