Wonder Woman's Original Costume Returns

Will Wonder Woman ditch the pants for issue #609?

While the change of attire for Wonder Woman in her ongoing series was not the most prominent alteration that took place with the release of her 600th issue, it was something that definitely sparked a conversation. As a result, it's no wonder (no pun intended) that when the image of her in her original costume graced the variant cover for issue #609, that it would spark the conversation of whether or not it meant that she would soon return to her roots.

If you have been paying attention, then you know this is not the first time that we've seen DC hint at her "normal reality" and classic costume in the recent series. You may have noticed images of a Wonder Woman action figure, or graffiti art of Wonder Woman fighting in the last couple of issues- both depicting her in her classic costume. However, issue #609 will be the first time since the re-vamp of her series that we see the heroin appear front and center as her "normal" self.

On the variant cover, we see a classic Wonder Woman standing in front of the current Wonder Woman. The image is definitely beautiful, but not nearly as informative as the regular cover to issue #609. It is here that we see the current Wonder Woman laying on a battle field looking very defeated- behind this image are different versions of Wonder Woman from throughout her history, each of them fighting one another on what appears to be the ruins of Paradise Island (which has since been destroyed in the new series). Could this mean that the character may revert back to her "normal reality"?

The cover of the issue portrays several versions of her character from throughout the years. We went back and tracked some of the first  appearances of these costumes for fun- and to see just how many times she's changed her outfit.

Wonder Woman Vol. 1

Wonder Woman's very first appearance depicted her in a one piece leotard that is similar to the traditional costume most fans are familiar with today. Her series was launched in 1942, and lasted 329 issues. A variation of the first Wonder Woman appears on the cover to issue #609.

Sensational Comics Vol. 1

The same year her first volume of her self titled series hit shelves, Sensational Comics was released. Possibly published for more "conservative readers," the series featured Diana in a full skirt, and proved to folks who were skeptical of picking up a comic with the word "woman" in the title, that she was just as cool as Superman. Maybe. I made that last part up.

Wonder Woman Vol. 2

Back in 1995 when writer  Bill Messner-Loebs   signed on to write Wonder Woman , he tasked the redesign of Diana's costume to artist Mike Deodato Jr. who got to do "whatever he wanted" with the character. Giving her a leather jacket and biker shorts "doubled her sales." But that could be because Deodato started putting her in thongs and making her "hot."  Or at least that's what he said in an interview .

Blackest Night: Wonder Woman

Serving to bridge the gap between her ongoing series and the Blackest Night story, Blackest Night: Wonder Woman was a three issue mini series that featured Wonder Woman fighting Maxwell Lord, dies and returns as a Star Sapphire.  Then of course, she reverts back to normal.

Now that we have taken a look at the various costumes that appear on the cover from throughout the years, what does it mean and how does it relate to the issue and to the future of her series? Does the image on the cover depict her fighting through the timeline (which had been altered by the Gods) and is something alluded to in Action Comics; or is it something else entirely? Based on the solicit, the cover may be just a vision revealed to her by Dr. Psycho- but will it be a  blessing or a curse? What do you think will happen? Do you think that he "normal" reality Wonder Woman will return, and if so, when? Which costume was your favorite?
