Wizard Magazine No Longer Printed

Wizard Magazine stops printing issues, and goes exclusively online in Feb 2011.

Not only did you get the best in comic book news, but you also got KISS stickers.
Not only did you get the best in comic book news, but you also got KISS stickers.
For many years, every comic book fan got their news from a magazine called "Wizard." It was a magazine with a great sense of humor featuring a great selection of news and a monthly price guide. And according to BleedingCool, the magazine that started in 1991 has officially stopped production of the print version of the magazine.

"Almost all Wizard magazine staff have been laid off, and all freelance engagements cancelled...Sister magazine Toyfare, covering the toy market, has not been affected, nor have the Wizard comic conventions."

The magazine did a lot for the industry, and many times it outsold some of the most popular comics on the shelves. The book was started back in 1991 by Gareb Shamus and Stephen Shamus and it was the place to go for breaking news in the comic book industry; however, with the popularization of the internet came news-websites that could get the info to the consumer a bit quicker than once a month.
 == TEASER ==
In a Wizard press release from today, Wizard announced Gareb Shamis, one of the original creators of the magazine, the recently appointed President and CEO of Wizard World, Inc will launch a new online publication, most likely because of the death of the printed publication:

Wizard World plans to launch in February 2011 an all-new digital magazine called ‘Wizard World’ that will appeal to pop-culture fans, the same audience to which Mr. Shamus has catered to, for over 20 years. Wizard World digital magazine will provide coverage of the world of comic books, toys and superheroes, and the personalities behind them.

“This is a very exciting day for Wizard World and the industries it serves,” said Shamus. “Having the Tour produced by a public company provides additional opportunities to expand and grow the Tour. The new digital magazine Wizard World will give consumers the content they want in a magazine format with which they are familiar, but distributed in a form that is always available at any time on any device. It is a natural evolution for us in this market.”

20 years and over 200 issues later, Wizard has shut down, but don't worry, the Wizard website is still going strong, there's a new timely online publication to look forward to through Wizard World, and those of you who love the Wizard Conventions and Toyfare will still be able to enjoy those. Many thanks to Wizard for the years of great articles, hilarious one panel shots of action figures in compromising situations, and the price guide, which I spent hours upon hours looking at to see how much my copy of X-Men 2099 #1 was worth. What are your fond memories from Wizard? Did you have a favorite article? What do you think of the new online publication?

Update

Apparently Toyfare is also ceasing publication. Is this the end of Twisted Toyfare Theater or will that live on in the digital magazine area?

Wow. Even though I haven't read the thing in at least five years, I'm a little sad just now.

After all, I saw the first pages of the Ultimates #1 in an issue of Wizard, back in '02. That's worth something, isn't it?

Oh well. Gotta move with the times.

Although I never really read it, the importance of the magazine causes me a small amount of sadness.

It is most definitely a sign of the times.  Print is dying. "

That's what's really scary.  How long before comic books go under?

They screwed the pooch by destroying their price guide.  Who wasn't smart enough to see that the price guide was the ONE thing that folks couldn't really get online?  I loved the magazine growing up, but if they can't see their own competitive advantage then they deserve to go under.

Interesting how this came about after some discussions concerning digital mediums in the Artist Forum.

Well, Wizard was a fun mag during its early to mid-run, although I found the Price Guide to be a joke.  Totally off-kilter most of the time, and no shop I ever frequented used it.  Comics Buyer's Guide was my choice to help in that area.

Despite that, Wizard used to be fun.  With the Twisted Toy Theatre and other humorous features, they enjoyed comics and never took it all too seriously.  There Coup de Grace though was the Halloween Costume Contest.  Holy Smoke in a bottle, that was the schtuff.  So funny..and creative.

However, I'd read that there had been constant  staff and managerial problems, and it seemed to affect the content.  I would get the mag sporadically.  Then a few years ago, the owner  of a comic book shop actually dissuaded me from buying it, telling me the cover price had gone up again.  You'd think he would want to sell it but I guess he saw the writing on the wall.  It is a shame all things went down, but it seems like, to me, they could've prevented this from happening.

Wonder how much of an impact going online will affect their profit margin and/or if the Wizard World Cons will be affected by any of this.  Curious.

Good, ever since their 200 Greatest Comic Characters list, Wizard has been shown to be nothing but incompetent.

Wow! I was just looking to get a subscription in the next week or so. It's taken a big turn in it's content in the last 10 years or so with the price guide being pretty pointless lately but a pretty fun read. I guess that takes my monthly magazine spending down a few bucks. I'll just buy more comics!

BTW.. What's the best price guide out there now?

There really aren't any descent comic book magazines other than Wizard. This pretty terrible sentiment on the magazine industry.  I don't have a lot of confidence that the digital version will last very long.

It is a shame, really. At times it was my online guide to what was happening in the comic world. Humorous and to the point. A great point to catch on if you were new and some articles were a teaser to my imagination.

I do have to say though it was losing it's edge. To much pictures, articles about movies and tv-shows...  Which doesn't mean I'm happy it's going away...

Not at all surprised.  I reviewed #228 back in July, and said then that the quality wasn't there.  Expect Clint to follow - the fact it prints new comics in its pages won't keep it alive forever.

Wow.....Wizard has passed away....:( An icon has died.... What I remember most.... A hot summer-day in the city...walking past a comic-book store, entering it, buying a new Wizard. After a day in the sun I went home, got a chair, pulled it outside into the yard. Got myself a Coke, birds singing, the sun on my head .... and the Wizard in my hands. Thanks for that memory... you will be missed!

AH this was a painful and slow death. Most may blame the internet and yes...sites like the awesome comicvine (sorry guys you had a part in this death too)
But after having a subscription on a healthy collection of back issues growing up, it was the juvenile humor and the articles and stories that came off as fluff and page filler to get to the stupid caption jokes and letters page

I will miss Brute and Babe, The How to Draw articles and of course the FULL price guide...WIZARD was a piece of my childhood and will honor the good times as a fond memory

This is bittersweet. I used to read Wizard when I was like 9 and just started getting into comics. The mag just kept getting worse. The whole "masterpiece" controversy was pretty shady, and the writing was shallow and sexist. It was no Comic Foundry, and frankly it was no Comic Vine.

That being said I do feel for the staff. Hope they find a new path.

I'm quite disappointed to learn that both Wizard and Toyfare are ceasing publication.

I've enjoyed and subscribed to both for many years now.  I wonder; What happens to my subscription?

Anyway, it's yet another example of the decline and death of print media.   It's sad, but I must admit Wizard had got too far away from it's roots (comics) and had become way too focused on movies and such.  In a way Wizard stopped publication back when they turned into a promotional vehicle for movies.  If I wanted that I'd have never subscribed to Wizard to begin with.   Still, I wish Wizard had went back to covering comics and survived.

Apparently Wizardworld will attempt to survive and endure on the internet.  We'll see how lucrative an internet-based business model turns out to be for them, they've got a lot of competition.

I probably had the first 50 issues or so, but I got out of comics for a bit in my twenties. Sad to see a publication halted, I vividly remember their "How to Draw" columns, which reminds me...where is Bart Sears now?
