The Evolution of Harley Quinn

Harley's coming to the big screen soon but are you familiar with all her different looks over the years?

Harley Quinn first appeared on Batman: The Animated Series in 1992's "Joker's Favor" episode. Since then, she's become a fan-favorite among many. Eventually she made her move into the comic world with multiple appearances and even her own series. Harley has even crossed over into video games and soon will be on the big screen in the 2016 Suicide Squad movie.

You can check out and read up on Harley on her wiki page HERE but here's a great infographic with her info and an evolution of her look over the years.

Evolution or regression?

It's as if they just suddenly realized in 2009 that they had accidentally created a female character who didn't dress like a porn star, and they immediately set about fixing their mistake.

A.K.A. how she became a skank.

Seriously, this was a HORRIBLE character to choose regardless of relevance.

While I'm not crazy about the newer costumes, her old costume just simply does not work outside of TAS. I was surprised that people were hoping for it in Suicide Squad. That'd look atrocious in live action.

Not true at all.

I think the Assault on Arkham version of Harley is the best redention of classic and modern outfits. I'd appreciate that being her normal outfit if they covered the midriff.

She's young and promiscuous and she dresses as such, plus she's evil. I don't understand how the majority of you'll want her to dress like a goody school nun..

It's more accurate to say this is Harley Quinn's transformation into Whorely Quinn *sigh*

This could be a good example of a female characters regression.

The problem isn't that Harley has regressed. Its that she debuted in an animated TV show for kids. When she moved to comics and games, she started to dress how most women typically dress in comics and games, which happens to be with less clothes.

Evolution implies that the changes to the character were built on the experiences of the character, yet that's not what Harley is. She a was a character, and then she was reinvented over and over. Here we are.

Absolutely not true

@batwatch: Agree, which is depressing because if I can ignore the New 52 she remains one of my favorite comic book characters.

Avatar image for nolidoli
Posted By Nolidoli

@lurkero: Agree! If you want to modernize her costume assault on Arkham was the best, although I wouldn't be hardcore against her Injustice costume or even Batman Arkham Knight because they still look like costumes and kind of still have the Harley feel from the cartoon. I'm not against compromise but I still don't get how the Suicide Squad movie is one at all (talking live action here not animated the animated was actually pretty good).

Sometimes I wonder if it'd be better for Harley if she were a Disney character.

Haha.

@jayc1324: Not all comic woman dress with less, while Catwoman does show some cleavage she's dresses head to toe not to mention many of the X-men woman aka Storm and Jean. Three of the three mentioned even have made it to live action and they are still dressed completely. I have more examples of comic woman who make it to film still clothed as well. Being a woman doesn't automatically mean less clothing in comics.

Avatar image for jayc1324

@nolidoli: I said 'most'

It doesn't automatically mean less clothing, but that is what happened to Harley here. Look at Halle Berry Catwoman compared to Catwoman from the comics. She is exposed a lot more.

Avatar image for nolidoli
Posted By Nolidoli

@jayc1324: True point and that movie completely tanked in Box offices. I wish movie producers would do their research, Halle Berry is no where near anyone's favorite cat woman. And looking back at super hero movies unless your including the B-Rated most woman are pretty clothed. Even in the most modern we get the last Avenger movie Black Widow is fully dressed.

Exactly. She started as a Harlequin, and ended up looking like a psychotic prostitute.

Harley still Harley to me, yes they give her less clothes but she is still charming and cute. My favorite Harley is Arkham Knight and the original. And Harley original outfit will not work in a comic book movie.

As I think about the more revealing clothing options from over the years, it comes to my mind that she's only been around since 1992. She is (I think don't quote me on this) the second youngest notable villain with the court of Owls being more recent, she hasn't even remotely had the time that Poison Ivy (who started the same year as Catwoman and Joker) has had. So there is a crap ton more costume changes to come. The costumes to come have the potential to even better than the TAS outfit and far worse.

P.S. The Timm/Dini/Sorken outfit and the Connor/Paliotti outfits are my favs because they are the ones that most notably connect to the personality and and atmosphere that the writers give her.

Y'know, political correctness has gotten out of hand. This is not the 30s or 40s,where everyone was clothed head to toe,I swear is everyone supposed to wear granny-pants and knickers? All the hate for Harley...tsk,tsk,Maybe DC and Marvel can continue the competition of ruining popular comic icons, doing good so far...

It (her original suit) worked in comics for 10+ years & nobody had a problem with it. It wasn't until she was featured in the games and until Jim Lee replaced Paul Levitz that things went down (at least as far as fabric is concerned) for Harley.

If you want to know why I think he's to blame & not Dan DiDio, all I'll do is mention some of his own (originally very good) comics, specifically the WildC.A.T.s , Gen13, Cybernary & others, which he managed to ruin between 1999 and 2003 (give or take a year), so it's not beyond him to ruin the suit of (a) character(s).

& if women wear very little in comics (which is common, but not always true. Batgirl is usually fully dressed & so is catwoman, except that her zipper might be slightly open), then why would they put more clothes on Poison Ivy, the Huntress, Power Girl (initially, anyway), Phantom Lady, Raven and others?

What kind of nuns do you know?! Because I'm fairly sure that being clothed head to toe in a skin tight jester outfit equates to dressing like a nun.

Is was actually just looking for something like this. I see they didn't include get appearance in Gods and Monsters, where she wears less than ever.

She's definitely a character that they chose to undress as time went on, although her original costume couldn't last forever.

I STRONGLY agree with anyone who's saying here original costume wouldn't work in the SS movie. She's look completely silly no matter how tight they made it.
