Spider-Woman (Finally) Gets a New Costume

After 37 years, Jessica Drew is getting ready for a new look.

Spider-Woman first appeared in 1977's MARVEL SPOTLIGHT #32. Since then, Jessica Drew has pretty much had the same costume. Thirty-seven years really isn't a long time to have the same costume. Characters develop classic looks and you simply embrace them. But Spider-Woman's costume isn't necessarily a favorite among everyone. There's been the occasional arguments against the design of the costume and what it appears to be implying.

That being said, Spider-Woman is getting a new look. Unveiled at USA Today as part of an announcement the character and new costume will debut the Spider-Man Unlimited mobile game, we get to see what Jessica will be wearing in the new year.

"As much as I'm a fan of spandex and it has its time and place, I felt Jess as a character could move away from that for a good long while," says Spider-Woman editor Nick Lowe.

It's sometimes hard to accept a character changing their iconic look but editor Nick Lowe has a good point. Spider-Woman has moved beyond being a simple superhero. She hasn't been one for some time. When you look at her in comics such as SECRET AVENGERS, while the art looks great, she still seems a little out of place in her traditional outfit.

As for why the character is so complex, check out our 3-Minute Expert video that attempts to capture everything about her.

The new costume will appear in her regular series. USA Today reports that beginning with SPIDER-WOMAN #5 (drawn by Javier Rodriguez), Jessica will focus more on street-level threats in New York City. Ben Urich will play a bigger role in the series as well. With Jessica spending more time on the 'street-level,' it makes sense for her to have a costume that appears more...normal.

The costume was designed by Kris Anka. To check out more of the new costume, look for Spider-Woman in the Spider-Man Unlimited game.

@skyhawk1:

Tumblr is already goin ape over this, and yes, fan art is already drawing her as young as Bab's.

Javier Rodriguez announced he is on the book with that issue also.

With a new "purpose and cast" I bet she enrolls in University, Anya will announce she is trans or gay and "boom" Marvel has their Batgirl.

A revamp was needed for the book given her affiliations but I am just not feeling "Jessica Gordon".

Absolutely horrendous. I'm constantly reminded why I stopped buying any of the mainstream comic books. The whole "more practical" mentality is complete bollocks.

To paraphrase something I once heard, the more realistic they try to make superheroes, the less believable they become.

The reason Spider-Woman's costume has persisted for so long is because it was perfect. It didn't need modifying. It's a little sad that the vocal minority feminists are dictating the direction of comic books. Most of them don't even read comic books, and they never will. Yet DC and Marvel think they're somehow going to gain readers by appealing to them. On the other hand many female readers (at least based on the ones I know and the various blogs I read) actually enjoy the sexiness of the female superheroes and aren't asking for these costume changes.

Oh well. That's enough of the soap box for me. Fashion is cyclical, and in another decade or so, spandex will be the "new" hot thing for super heroes. (Just take a look at the X-Men when they went through their "realistic" phase.)

Something about this quote just bugs me. Maybe I'm reading to much into this but would he be saying that if the character was male? How does it suddenly not work?

I have never been a fan of spandex for characters. I think it is simply the by-product of comic books coming out so long ago, and superman being modeled after the "strongmen" of the circus shows.

Now, unfortunately, people seem to be afraid to move away from it...mostly because of the fans.

Just look at all the people who never wanted Superman to lose his red underwear in the movies. Seriously...red underwear...and these fans couldn't go without it. That's absurd to me.

Spandex are also highly impractical for combat use.

I say this for both female and male characters.

Like it or not, spandex and tights will be part of superhero comics forever. It's been a part of it for too long to stop now. Also there are superheroes where the spandex look works and continues to make sense. Spider-Man made his costume because he originally used it to appear on TV and was going to be an entertainer with it, ergo a lot like a circus act, and he just kept the costume.

It looks pretty good. It's funny, I was just talking with my brother last night about how awful her old costume was (no offense meant to those who liked the old one), and today I see this.

Wait...what if Marvel do this because Jessica Drew will appear in Marvel Cinematic Universe

I hope so. She'd fit in well with the HYDRA plot they have going now.

Zack Snyder, please. The red underwear is a classic. Superman still doesn't look right without it.

Implying Jessica has a character beyond her T&A.

So true. This and Batgirl's costume will be the new "black leather" of superhero design within the next few years.

Looks a bit like the new Batgirl costume. But what the heck, marvel doesn't care about tradition anymore. Looking at Carol Danver's new outfit it's pretty much easy to tell that marvel likes women in ugly costumes these days. And no one in marvel cares about secret identities anymore.

Although i like the costume, i really dislike sunglasses as part of a costume. Glasses instead of a mask? Are you fighting crime or skiing?? And i dont think it would be practical. Im seriously always losing my glasses, or sitting on them. Or what if the badguy goes in to a badly lit area? Game over hero, your disguise only works outside.

All kidding aside...i dont like sunglasses (I'm also looking at you hawkeye, all new factor, green arrow and other heroes im forgetting with sunglasses)

Good thing they got her out of that spandex. She was too "over-sexualized".

Hey, while we're at it, let's get Spider-Man out of his spandex. Reduce his muscle tone like they reduced Spider-Woman's bust. It must make all the men uncomfortable at how over-sexualized he is.

Let's get Superman, Flash, and Martian Manhunter (and easily 30% of all superheroes) out of their spandex and into Practical, Realistic shirts and pants. Because we all know readers of comics; a fictional medium, value realism and practicality of outfits when fighting aliens and demons and other ilk.

Also, Hulk needs to put a shirt on and patch up those holes in his pants. Maybe throw in a beer gut and body hair to make sure no perverts can misconstrue his outfit as sexualized.

One thing about spandex that everyone who doesn't like it may be overlooking, it not only gave freedom of movement but it was light enough to wear under a persons clothing, made for easier quick when danger arose. Even the lenses of the mask could be stowed easily.

Pretty close to his original designs for her here. I like it but as with all comics it can grow and evolve over time. Carol grew her hair back out and other artists will draw her in the costume and make her different shaped in their styles. I think its a big step forward for her and may help her get on a show or movie.

I used to have a hoodie from the Civil War Marvel stuff and I would get comments from my sister, my mom, my brother-in-law's female friends, my grandmother, other women, about her costume. They would immediately single her out of the group and talk about how she had a huge chest and painted on costume and such. Also when a woman wears a shirt (or costume) it wouldn't conform to her chest and make it look like she was wearing a body paint costume.

I don't necessarily dislike this costume but I'm not crazy about it either. Feels very reminiscent of the new Batgirl look (that I love) but with a Spider-Woman flare to it. Overall, I am lukewarm on this. I definitely think a costume change was needed and quite frankly long overdue.

I happy the fact they finally changed her blah looking costume, i'm not happy that now she has a body like a teenage girl..... i prefer the busty look. Now what ever happen with the black and white costume? i realize another female character wears it now, but i have an old 90s issue of Spider-woman and she was wearing that.

@shroudofsorrow: I don't dislike that design, but it looks more appropriate to an espionage/thriller character/story-arc than to a street hero that they are trying to make more accessible to the 20somethings and hipster crowd.

@lurkero: meh...Marvel only do this because they probably will use Jessica Drew in Marvel Cinematic Universe. I'm not surprise if they change Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch costume in comics. In fact looks like Quicksilver is now wear glass in the comics

It also means Facebook game Avengers Alliance can finally give Spider-Woman an alternate uniform. Before now, they couldn't, unless they put Jessica in Julia Carpenter's duds.
