Spider-Man: Homecoming: Who Is The Shocker?

Spider-Man's D-List villain has his own spot in the upcoming movie. Where did this character come from?

Spider-Man will be facing more than just the Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming, which is now in theaters. The web-slinger will also face a D-list villain from yesteryear, the Shocker. Many fans may not be too familiar with this character, since he doesn't often appear in the comics. So who is the Shocker and where does he come from?

This will be the first appearance of Shocker on the big screen. Bokeem Woodbine (Fargo, Total Recall) plays Herman Schultz in the film, who goes on to become Shocker #2, according to IMDb. The comic book version of the Shocker first made his debut in the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man #46 in 1967. The character was created by legendary writer Stan Lee and artist John Romita.

The man under the Shocker mask is New York City-born engineer Herman Schultz. This inventor dropped out of high school and used his talents to become the world's best safe-cracker. However, he was eventually caught and put in prison for his crimes.

While incarcerated, Schultz developed gauntlets that could shoot air blasts that vibrate at a high frequency. After using his new powers to escape prison, he became a super-powered criminal and one of Spider-Man's many villains.

In addition to his gauntlets, Shocker developed a suit that would allow him to absorb the shock from his weapon. In later years, Schultz upgraded his suit further, allowing him the ability to create a protective vibrational field. You may be wondering where the "shock" part comes from The Shocker. Well, his powers are not at all electricity based; they instead revolve around projecting and absorbing force or shock.

In the realm of comics, there aren't a lot of great stories involving this Silver Age character. Aside from a few one-shots, the only serious story of note is "The Origin of the Species" from 2010. During that event, Norman Osborn--also known as the Green Goblin--has a baby, and Spider-Man's villains are out to take the Goblin's kin away from him. Shocker isn't the star of the story, but he's around for the entirety of it.

The book that every comic book fan--and Shocker fan--should read is Superior Foes of Spider-Man. The 12-issue series follows a group of Spider-Man's lesser-known villains as they plan a heist. The Shocker has his own interesting arc in this book, which involves him babysitting the disembodied head of Silvermane--which is shown above. It's hilarious and one of the few series that gives readers an inside look into the world of villainy.

If you're looking for more stories involving Shocker, check these comics out.

  • Superior Foes of Spider-Man: Not only is it one of Marvel's best and weirdest books of the 21st century, it's a great comedy and heist comic. This was a 12-issue miniseries, available in trade.
  • "Origin of the Species": The villains in Spider-Man's life are after the Green Goblin's child. Takes place in Amazing Spider-Man #642-647.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is out now. You can check out our review here. You can also learn more about characters and elements in the film by checking out "Who Is The Vulture" and "What Is Damage Control."

I'm just a little thrown off with an African American having a Germanic last name like Schultz.

Superior foes isn't all that great for shocker fans, dude's being treated like dirt. One of the spidey comics from the 90's (where he had a big bulky suit) is better for the fans

@wakel: shocker is a high powered goon like rhino. Not much depth unless one tries to create empathy for him like they did with Sandman

D-list villain? For real?!

The Shocker has appeared in all the major Spider-Man cartoons as an important and powerful villain, he is no more D-list than Sandman or Electro...

D-List my ass.

It happens. He is fact African American as you said. There are plenty of black people with European surnames, as many of their ancestors were stripped of their original names.

I used to think so too until I finished reading the entire series. Initially I was very pissed off with the fact that everyone looked down on him, viewing him as a coward and space occupier; however, as I kept reading, I noticed something. He is arguably the most competent member of the team. Now that IS how it should be, but in a book where every character disrespects him, it took me a little by surprise. I then realized the joke.

As a fan you know that the Shocker has actually bested Spider-Man numerous times. This series tackles two issues.

1. He's only really ever beaten Spidey in one-on-one fights

2. Many writers within the past decade or so, don't appear to know that.

The book makes fun of the fact that many writers have portrayed him as useless ever since he became a running gag in the Ultimate comics. In which he gets one-shotted every issue and absolutely everyone thinks he's a joke. For some reason, that bled over into 616 books for a while.

Superior Foes in a way, makes fun of the fact that nobody knew how to write the character and that nobody has seen his victories, because he fights better solo.

Everyone calls him a coward, but he was the only one to return to the diner to save Boomerang when Punisher (chameleon) attacked.

Everyone thinks he cant fight, but he was the only one doing any real damage to the Heroes for Hire. They lost because of his teammates. He even one-shotted Punisher from his car.

Everyone thinks he's incompetent, but he can devise escape plans using mathematics.

To me, the joke is that every other character views Herman as garbage, when in fact, they are garbage.

@warlordeternal: if anything most African Americans would have British, Scottish or Irish last names. Creole undoubtedly French but Germanic is a long shot.

The Shocker is a cool villain. I don't know when writers turned him into a joke (actually, I think I know the answers: lots of clueless writers in the last 15/20 years), but except for his suit kinda looking like a duvet, he's one of the greatest Spidey villains. D-list foes are guys like Spot, Gibbon, Kangaroo...surely not Shocker! Ok, maybe not Green Goblin (Norman and Harry) or Venom or Dock Ock or poor old Kraven level, but right behind them with Electro, Chameleon, Mysterio, Hobgoblin and the Vulture!

P.S. I always thought Shocker was jewish.

Superior Foes was underrated. It needs a sequel. Spencer's "The Fix" will have to do for now.

I was glad he was in the film but was somewhat disappointed in his portrayal.

I I wished he would have two of his shocker gloves because I felt he would have put up a better fight against Spider man near the end. And I wouldn't have mind if the gloves could have fired out shockwaves as a long range weapon as to help him also.

The one shock glove thing kind of annoyed me.

@devilmenworks: he'll be better than before when he joins the sinister six in the sequel. Vulture, scorpion, shocker are three members of the team. My guess is rhino and definitely Mysterio are going to be a part of the team but I can't speculate who will be the sixth. Tinkerer would be the team's tech guru.

@the-wraith: I felt Logan Marshall Green was poorly utilized. I would have chosen him to be Mac Gargen aka Scorpion. Is he still attached to some TV show? If so, that's probably why they killed him off. Plus if they were going to have one of the Enforcers be involved in a Spider-Man film then they should have included all three.

@ravenvice01: I hope so. I think he definitely has a lot of potential to offer for future installments. And with their history and common enemy (him, Scorpion and Vulture) working together to take down Spider-man would make for a very good movie.

You mentioned Tinker as the 6th member, you don't think that Sony will make Doc Oct the 6th member?

@ravenvice01: I see, I like your list. And that would be pretty cool to have Shocker outfitted with a suit of Vibranimum.

Another reason why I think Doc would be involved is because they could make a great storyline with him because since Peter is still young, and impressionable, and Doc Oct can be another scientific influence in his life( in some ways similar to what Spider-Man 2 did)

And if Rhino is part of the Sinister Six, I just hope he doesn't have a stupid suit like he did in ASM2.

Something I never thought about but was that overweight guy who was building the tech for Toomes and the others the Tinkerer?

(Answer for the spoiler section) Yes I think they actually put that in parentheses in the credits IIRC.

@devilmenworks: I know. I was a bit disappointed with that fat guy from MIB 3 being Tinkerer. I would have had Stan Lee play Tinkerer instead. You have a point about Doc Ock being a role model for Peter. As for Rhino, they had to make his suit realistic. Not sure how many movie goers would find an actual rhino skin suit on a Russian mobster as believable unless they make it out of vibranium too.

@arranvidreturns: Always loved Shocker, Scorpion, and Vulture! I would like to see another attempt at Electro and Lizard as well as Doc Ock (although it'll be tough to compete with Spider-man 2's version). I'd also like to see Jack O'lantern (pre Hobgoblin) . Also, there's a Marvel Scarecrow (Ebeneezer Laughton) who was an Iron-Man and Ghost Rider villain (who I'd love to see in film), but the DC version is more well know and would probably never get a chance. Anyway, so glad to see some fellow support for Shocker as I always thought he was a cool villain.

I'd also like to see some of Iron Man's/Avengers enemies emerging like: Whirlwind, Blizzard, Dreadknight , Hypnotionia, and Grey Gargoyle. (I know, it won't happen, but it's my own personal wishlist).

@silentx777: I know what you mean. I was disappointed that Iron Man didn't utilize his vast rogue gallery. Marvel's scarecrow can be merged with Nightmare for a Dr. Strange film. We may see Hobgoblin and Jack o lantern team up in a movie. I would reserve Kraven and lizard for a black panther sequel.
