Comic Vine: What's happening in Sonic: Mega Drive?

Ian Flynn: “Sonic: Mega Drive” is a fun Classic era Sonic story. Dr. Eggman is after something called the “Ancient Gears,” and it’s up to Sonic and his friends to stop him.

You've delved into these characters before, but what makes the Mega Drive issue special?

Flynn: With this story in particular, we’re approaching it very much as if it were a game. Typically we adapt the game story into a comic format, but this time around we’re almost taking an opposite approach.

Sonic can be pretty continuity heavy. Will this issue work well for those a bit newer to the character?

Flynn: Absolutely. We’re only trotting out the core Classic cast - Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy Rose and Dr. Eggman - the ones even casual fans will recognize. This story is built to be enjoyed by everyone.

What do you like about writing these characters?

Flynn: I grew up reading, watching and playing Sonic. They’re a part of my childhood, and after writing them for ten years, they’re part of my life. They’re familiar and fun.

How does it feel to be involved in an issue celebrating the 25th anniversary of Sonic?

Flynn: As I said, Sonic has been a big part of my life for a long time now, so it’s a badge of honor to be part of his 25th Anniversary celebration.

Did you play the Sega Sonic games a lot growing up? Got any fond memories?

Flynn: Since the Genesis days! I’ll never forget playing through Sonic the Hedgehog 2 with my younger brother, having him be “tactical” with Tails. Or purchasing my Dreamcast with months of saved-up allowance and lunch money. Or some of the hilarious glitches my wife and I conjured in “Sonic06.”

Who did you like playing as more, Sonic or Knuckles?

Flynn: Oh, Knuckles easily. Knux is my boy. Smashing through walls, climbing up walls, gliding along - can’t beat him.

Thanks to Flynn for answering our questions and make sure to check out Sonic: Mega Drive when it hits stores on July 6!
