S.H.I.E.L.D. #7 Merges the Marvel TV and Comics Characters Closer Together

We're seeing more and more changes creeping in.

We've often seen changes in the depictions of comic book characters when certain actors play them in the movies or on TV. With the current S.H.I.E.L.D. comic, written by Mark Waid, we are seeing how Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is slowly coming into the Marvel comic universe.

Looking at the cover, you get an idea of what to expect. There will be some spoilers if you're not caught up with Season 2 of the show. There will also be some minor spoilers for S.H.I.E.L.D. #7.

As you may know, the character Skye, played by Chole Bennet, had a mysterious past. We eventually found out Skye wasn't her real name. She was actually Daisy Johnson. In the comics, her father is Calvin Zabo, aka Mr. Hyde. On the show, her father was played by Kyle MacLachlan.

The issue starts out with a S.H.I.E.L.D. mission to apprehend Mr. Hyde. Daisy leads the charge and after they de-power Zabo, they have a conversation and we discover what this mission is really about.

We find out that the Inhuman connection seen in the show has been incorporated into Daisy's character in the comics. It turns out that because of that part of her biology as well as Zabo's genetic experiments on himself, her own DNA has become unstable. She's even wearing the power gauntlets seen on the show to help Skye control her powers when using the Quake blasts fractured the bones in her arms.

Another things is the way Zabo looks after he was powered down. Check out Greg Smallwood's art.

Looks a lot like Kyle MacLachlan to me!

One minor confusion for comic readers and viewers was the name. Viewers of the show knew the character simply as Skye. Hearing her called "Daisy" felt weird. The same goes for the comic character. Quake, or Daisy, hasn't been known as "Skye"...until now.

As Zabo is being set up to try to find a cure for his daughter, Coulson refers to Daisy as Skye.

As I read the issue, I was wondering if there'd be any mention or connection to Daisy's recent adventures in space with Bucky in the BUCKY BARNES: THE WINTER SOLDIER series. Now Daisy has the nickname of Skye. It's not clear if anyone other than Coulson will refer to her by that outside of this series.

One final moment that ties the show and comic worlds closer isn't really something new in the series. We've seen Coulson's character go through some changes in this series compared to when he was introduced in BATTLE SCARS and his recent appearances in SECRET AVENGERS. Coulson's main concern is his agents. When Zabo acts up, we see him take a big risk for one of his own.

Coulson takes some of Zabo's formula in order to go toe to toe with Mr. Hyde. You'll want to check it out.

The series has already brought in Fitz, Simmons, and Melinda May. Is it a bad thing to see more cohesion between the two? Obviously if fans of the show find their way to reading this comic series, having some similarities could be their entryway into the comic Marvel Universe. Seeing little changes like Daisy Johnson now suddenly called "Skye" might be a little weird but could be the small price for getting more people into reading comics. At least I don't think she's ever been called Skye in the comics before.

Check out the issue. Mark Waid is tying to two universes together and seeing Greg Smallwood art here is fantastic.
