SDCC 2014 Interview: Mark Waid Talks STAR WARS: PRINCESS LEIA

One of the toughest characters in the Star Wars universe is getting her own miniseries.

The Star Wars comic news keeps coming. We know Jason Aaron is writing a STAR WARS series and Kieron Gillen is doing a Darth Vader one. Because there's a lot to these characters, we'll also see a series focusing on Princess Leia.

There are a lot of layers to Leia Organa. Mark Waid will be taking the reigns of a five-issue miniseries with art by Terry Dodson. We talked to Mark to find out what his take on Leia will be in this series.

COMIC VINE: Were you approached to do this series or did you pick Leia?

MARK WAID: I was approached, but she would have been my first choice. She's such a layered character.

CV: We didn't get to see much of her thoughts or reaction to Alderaan's destruction. Will you focus on any of that?

MW: That is, in fact, the thrust of the whole story. Once the Death Star is destroyed and the adrenaline dies down, how does she deal with the loss of her entire world? What are her responsibilities as the Princess of a planet that's no longer there? Will she choose to rebuild her heritage--and if so, how and with what resources?

CV: Any chance we'll see some flashbacks to Leia's days before the Rebellion?

MW: Every chance. I bet she was one of those kids who was born 20 years old.

CV: What made Leia become such a fierce leader and fighter?

MW: That's all for us to reveal. Suffice it to say that she was gifted/burdened with a great sense of responsibility from the moment she could understand what that meant--and read the story for how that played out.

CV: Is this series going to focus on the period before Episodes IV and V?

MW: Yes. Our story takes place immediately after the end of Episode IV.

CV: What can we do to prepare to be blown away by Terry Dodson's art?

MW: Strap yourselves in, because it's phenomenal.

STAR WARS: PRINCESS LEIA #1 is on sale in March 2015.

It's weird, I wasn't super-interested in this mini until I saw that cover image. She looks like Hayley Atwell as Princess Leia, which would be absolutely right, and good. I think I'll pick this up.

This may be the Marvel Star Wars book I'm most excited for given the creative team, and cause Leia kicks ass.

Any idea on if these new comics are canon or not? Since, ya know… the entire expanded universe and all the games are no longer canon. I was just starting to get into the books too :'(

I love Leia and all that she stands for (though I believe Ashoka Tano is a much better character than her or Mara Jade. Please don't hurt me!) and I can't wait to see her journey after episode IV.

Also, hope Marvel releases a Han Solo and Boba Fett series. Just sayin.

Cant they have it take place during the beginning of ROTJ when she is Jabba's slave, & have her recounting past events in her life, so that we can see her in that Hot bikini?

@spitfirepanda: All stories going forward will be part of the new unified canon. That includes the new Marvel comics, Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir, Star Wars Rebels, the new books (starting with A New Dawn), obviously all of the new movies, and the short stories from Star Wars Insider. The six movies and The Clone Wars are the current canon until the new stories start coming out.

I sorta feel your pain on just getting into the books. I've read more Star Wars books in the last year than I have ever before but a lot of the content was hit or miss. Imo the new unified canon looks very promising and will more than likely result in a more consistent story telling quality.

@stmichalofwilson: Ahsoka is awesome. Her character arc in The Clone Wars was so well done. I was not the biggest fan of her when I first saw The Clone Wars movie but by the time she walks away from the Jedi Order at the end of season 5 I had grown more attached to her than I had ever imagined I would.

@syncig: Thanks for the info :)

I've been getting more into star wars lately, though admittedly I hadn't gotten far in the expanded universe. With all new stories going forward standing as canon, it'll make it easier to remember and keep track of. Now I just have to start collecting.
