SDCC 2013: Marvel: Cup O' Joe Panel

What did Marvel's Chief Creative Officer reveal at this year's San Diego Comic-Con?

It's time for Marvel to spill some major teases and see what new stuff they're bringing our way. The panel consisted of Marvel's Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada, Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso, Talent Scout C.B. Cebulski, writer Rick Remender, artist Scottie Young, writer Sam Humphries, Senior Editor Nick Lowe, Senior Editor Steve Wacker, and writer Brian Michael Bendis.

  • Panel kicks off with Bendis saying issue #5 of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY will dive into Angela -- who she is, why she's here. Also teased Gamora vs. Angela.
  • HAWKEYE #16 will be a "big story" for Kate Bishop.
  • INHUMAN will show Blackbolt and company in a way "we've never seen them." Couldn't reveal much because it has "so much to do with the end of INFINITY."
  • REVOLUTIONARY WAR revealed. Begins in November and focuses on Marvel UK characters (Death's Head was the primary character mentioned and shown in the image). By Andy Lanning and various artists. Aims to bring these characters back into the Marvel universe in a "big way."
  • YOUNG AVENGERS - AFTER PARTY. By Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie. "After Party" will be a "who's who" of characters who will be big in the next few years.
  • WOLVERINE ORIGIN II revealed. By Kieron Gillen and Adam Kubert in November.
No Caption Provided

  • Fan asks why there's so many Avengers/X-Men books. Joe says it's democratic at Marvel and we tell them what we want with our cash. "It's simple supply and demand. All we're trying to do is tell you great stories."
  • Fan asks about Cloak and Dagger's role in the Ultimate Universe. Bendis points out the new arc with Galactus will have Cloak and Dagger front and center. Says he spent a lot of time with their origin and that's a big hint he's going to spend some time with them.
  • Bendis seemingly implies another hero from Earth will be with the Guardians of the Galaxy when Iron Man is no longer on the team.
  • Fan asks if we'll ever get an Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. comic book series. Joe says, "you never know." Says the fact there's a new Nick Fury and Agent Coulson in the Marvel U means they're hoping to get there.
  • The panel says they'll eventually tell the story of how Punisher escaped the facility the Avengers put him in.
  • Panel says they have big plans for both Nick Furys.
  • Fan points out comic sales have improved and ask what the main contributing factor is. Joe says it's just trying their best to put out a good product. From the TV shows to the movies, says they just want to provide good products.
  • Fan compliments Remender's UNCANNY X-FORCE. Asks if Wolverine's personality will rub off on Avengers. Remender points it's an ideological conflict and that's what's going on now in UNCANNY AVENGERS. Says he likes that conflict and they're true to who they are -- they're not going to compromise that. For example, says Cap splintered the team when he found out about X-Force. Current story explores whether Wolverine should be on the Avengers.
  • Fan says she's a converted from "the other company" and the panel asks if she feels better -- she says "yes!" Panel says, "You want us to bring back Stephanie Brown? You got it!"
  • Fan asks about a Deadpool movie. Joe plainly points out its a Fox property.
  • Fan asks if there are plans for any more all female teams. Panel says, "there are without a doubt." Remender says the next five issues of UNCANNY AVENGERS will focus on Rogue/Scarlet Witch.
  • Fan asks if we can expect to see more minority superheroes in movies. Joe simply responds, "yes."
  • Fan asks if we'll see more of AVENGERS ARENA. They say, "stay tuned. We have big plans."
  • Fan asks about a Daredevil movie. Bendis says, "that's a great idea." Joe says, "we love Daredevil. We're really excited -- just got the property back. Will there be something down the road? I would love to see something with Daredevil outside the comics and we're certainly mulling it over."
  • Fan asks if we'll get a new DARKHAWK series. They say the character has popped up in discussion a lot of times but nothing has come up yet.
  • Fan asks about plans for Luke Cage and Iron Fist. They say, "maybe somewhere down the road. You never know."
  • Fan asks about a RUNAWAYS TV show. They say "that would be cool" but point out they're only on their first live-action show.

It can't possibly be because there is a movie of it coming out lol

Not only that, but just because there is a human member? That doesn't exactly make them have ties to earth. They are kinda supposed to be an intergalactic team of Freedom Fighters,so I think that might be the reason why. I think

I dropped GotG since it is far too Earth-centric. Before it was a band of misfits going against impossible odds in far reaches of the galaxy. Now it's a band of misfits hanging/hooking up with Tony Stark and talking about Earth the whole time... just kind of completely missing the mark from what I had expected the book to focus on. There are enough 'defend earth' books.

I cannot be the only one that saw the first arc as 'defending earth' and rolled their eyes...

So...because it has Tony Stark it is now too "earth centric"?

Is this because of that new intergalactic law placed on Earth?

Because that seems to be one of the only times Earth was mentioned.. Well,I haven't picked up 5,so I don't know if that's the case or not..

Daredevil would work so much better in a TV format. Could be a spin on the cop procedural essentially. Low visual effects need too.

Marching to the bridge that paved the way to the golden gate of this kingdom many would compare to the grace of Eden the Army of darkness halted their advance. Breaking ranks the largest demon clad in blood stained armor stepped forward onto the aureate path. The Demon Grand General stepped to the center of the bridge standing with his gaze fixed on the gate. The boom of his roars breaking the dead silence before he slammed his sword against his breast plate. The annoying sound of Clang echoed in the wind. Growls, and roars the only audible sound the demons could emit at the gate began to form as if they where stating a decree ordering the gates to open, and there surrender this decree a directly from the mouth of their king to be spoken before the war progressed. The General’s inability to speak the language of humans leads this to fall of deft ears though they saw this as nothing more than there offer of leniency being disregarded by the worthless humans. Enraged at the lack of response to his words he roared once more sending saliva spraying from his mouth and dripping from his chops. His blade swinging forward the order had been giving for the army to continue their advance the, and raze of the kingdom to begin. The army of darkness behind him began to roar, and growl at the order knowing the time for slaughter had arrived. Present Day The afternoon was just beginning in this early winter season. The warrior would leave the gates of his Village, wearing newly obtained apparel for a quest of great importance. Siegfried would be seen wearing black pants and a long sleeve shirt. The fabric was soft, it had the capability of breathing to allow him to remain cool, yet at the same time the fabric was thick enough to keep him warm. On his abdomen he'd sport a plate armour covering the torso The collar of the breastplate would rise up around his neck giving no restriction to movement yet allowing him to guard his vitals a little bit better. The metal plate on the front with symbols etched into it proudly. Plates that covers from the fingers to the section of upper arms from elbow to area covered by shoulder armour. More that covered the feet, knees, lower legs, front and back, and thighs made from a variety of materials. Whilst onyx fabric dangled over his vessel, the cloak concealing the famed enigma from view. Alphonse was a northern country, yet the snow hadn't truly begun to fall yet. It was cold, yet bearable to anyone whom had lived here for more than a few years. Golden tresses swayed in the Boreas as the knight would wait by a tree..

Daredevil reboot possible :O

British Super Heroes series?

Marvel has countered their infinity event with these remarks.

Also, I know the remark about Luke Cage and Iron fist was for comics, but I at first thought it'd be for films. That gave me a brilliant idea for 2 films ;)

As a few others have mentioned upstream, I think the supposed toxicitity of the character has less to do with the character herself than her connection to Chuck Dixon. Chuck Dixon had a very public falling out with Didio and so

DC

are unwilling to use his characters and concepts. Stephanie Brown, Helena Bertinelli, Oracle and Bludhaven are all things he created or had a hand in developing into their iconic statuses and are all missing from the New 52. Tim Drake has been reduced to less than a shell of himself leading to the jokes about Tim Drake being a witness protection code name. Bane is the only Dixon character to remain arguably unscathed in the New52.

As for Cassandra Cain and her most recent appearances, those were in the Gates Of Gotham mini series, one of the last issues of Red Robin, and in Batman Incorporated #6, from the pre-Flashpoint volume, where she was set up as the Hong Kong Batman Inc representative, a role she seems to no longer have. In Batwing #10, Batwing went to Hong Kong on Inc business and had absolutely no interaction with or even mention of Cass.

Morrison definitely has more pull than most other creators, but he still doesn't have enough to get to use two characters who played a big role in his Batman Inc setup prior to the New 52.

Funny jab about Stephanie Brown, but the thing I'm not too happy to see is Wolverine Origins II with Kieron Gillan...as if he hasn't butchered Tony Stark's origins enough in his Iron Man run. Definite good info though here! Awesome!

Nah, that would be Jim Starlin, and Lee/Kirby prior to that. DnA and Keith Giffen basically did their own, updated take on things. Much as I love DnA/Giffen's take, the Starlin stuff before that was awesome too, and also a radically different take on Marvel Cosmic when compared to DnA's stuff.

I think Daredevil should be in the Amazing Spiderman movies. Spiderman is one of Daredevil's best buds and since Marvel has the rights, I think they should start incorporating him into the movies.

Great breakdown -- much appreciated.

I would love to see a showdown between Gamora and Angela, it will give us a good intro into the character's powers as it translates into the Marvel Universe. These "big plans" for Avengers Arena gets an eye roll from me but what has my nails digging into my palms from fisted hands is this whole, Scarlet Witch/Rogue focus over the next few issues in Uncanny Avengers. I am so unhappy with the turn the book has taken and holding up Rogue as this heels-in-the ground mutant defender and Scarlet Witch as the voice of calm reason and mutual harmony is just....very, very hard to stomach. Especially when it was Rogue who began to see the fissures in the P5 perfect world and helped Ms Marvel (now Captain Marvel) out from the Limbo that the Avengers were being held captive in.

Ah, Remender. I was defending you, dude. What the heck happened?

Overall, lots of new stuff coming out to look forward to. I'm in.
