Scott Derrickson to Work on Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange

Finally, Marvel's top mystic has a film coming his way.

It's been no secret that Marvel has wanted to do a Doctor Strange film for a few years, but outside of the animated film, there hasn't been too much moving forward, in terms of actual news about this upcoming film, until now. Scott Derrickson, writer and director of Sinister and Deliver Us from Evil, announced on his Twitter page today that he'll be involved in the upcoming Doctor Strange film.

No Caption Provided

It hasn't been announced yet whether he would be writer or directing the film, but there's a good chance he'll be directing the film. This may be quite the fit for Marvel and the director since a Strange film could easily have some horror elements to it, which Derrickson does very well. As of right now, there's no set date for the film, but the rumbling on the Internet say it could be out in either 2016 or 2017. We'll keep you updated as soon as there is more info.

I knew Marvel was hinting at a Strange adaptation but this is them actually putting money where their mouth is.

Not too sure about Derrickson's backlog as a director. Heard good things about Sinister and Exorcism of Emily Rose is an interesting movie but The Day the Earth Stood Still remake is pretty lackluster, and that's the film that's analogous to this one most closely (big-budget sci-fi tentpole based on beloved source material). Still intrigued though.

@_zombie_: @xwraith: He directs horror films like Sinister, Exorcism of Emily Rose, the Day the Earth Stood Still and Deliver Us From Evil.

I was hoping for someone who did horror with humor and oddity like say Don Coscarelli or Michael Dougherty. This should be cool too though. Honestly, the coolest thing about the reveal is that Dr. Strange is that close to development.

I kinda like the idea of Daniel Day-Lewis as Stephen Strange.

Though...I know he'd never do it. Or maybe superhero movies have proven themselves sophisticated enough for him to consider it.

Loved sinister, greatly paced horror film with a smart plot and an interesting main character , I have no doubt that he will give Doctor Strange a pretty good big screen treatment.

@spideysense44: I haven't seen Luke Evans in anything (except Robin Hood, but I don't remember the character "Sheriff's Thug"). I'm not sure what I think of Jared Leto. Something doesn't seem right to me (maybe he's too young for how I think of Strange?) but I could also imagine him doing a good job in the role.

Leto's actually 42 even though he looks like he could be 20 years old. I agree he could be great in the role, but its weird to think that a director for horror movies would want someone with a baby face.

Heh. One of the main films I identify with Leto is a horror film - Urban Legend - but that's probably just because the sequel was filmed close to my house. And Requiem for a Dream is terrifying, even if it's not really "horror".

I'm still waiting on that Black Panther movie.

But this is good. Seemingly foreshadowed already in TWS, and I'm looking forward to seeing who they cast as the role of Sorcerer Supreme (fingers crossed for Cumberbatch).

Let's keep Raimi away from Marvel if we can.

Anyway, I never saw any of this guy's movies, but that's been the same with most directors. On paper it sounds cool. I want a Doc Strange movie to be really f*cked up.

Huh, not someone I'd have expected Marvel to go with, but the same could be said for the Rossi's on CA: Winter Soldier. As for who plays the good Doctor, I'm kind of hoping for Timothy Olyphant, but Michael Biehn is also acceptable.

nice. so about that Black Panther and Miss Marvel movie?............just asking.

They'll probably call her Captain Marvel to follow more along the lines of where she is in the comics now.

And I'm guessing Phase 3 will go something along the lines of:

1. Ant-Man (late 2015)

2. Cap 3 (2016)

3. Dr. Strange (2016)

4. Thor 3 (2017)

5. Black Panther/Captain (or Ms.) Marvel (2017)

6. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (Assuming the first one does well and lends itself to a pt. 2 - 2018)

7. Nova/The Inhumans/The Winter Soldier/[Planet] Hulk (2018)

8. Avengers 3 - (The Infinity Gauntlet? - May 2019) now with Cap, Ant-Man, Panther/Marvel, Thor, Hulk, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Quicksilver, and potentially someone like Winter Soldier and Dr. Strange joining the action. And I'm hoping/thinking that what'll happen in GotG 2 is that Thanos will fight them, beat them, then go for Earth at the end of the movie with the Guardians arriving just in time to warn them of his coming.

There's a lot more to dislike about that trilogy than just Spider-Man 3. Even the much beloved Spider-Man 2 had some absolutely terrible parts.

We all know 'the truth' behind it, and you know what? Being made to use a character he didn't want to use is not an excuse for what went wrong with that movie. They gave him the stipulation of using Venom? Kay. That doesn't give him an excuse for poorly used villains all around (The Winter Soldier managed to use six villains. They don't all have to have a lot of development. Just make them not suck). That doesn't explain the retcon from the first film. That doesn't explain emo Peter or dancing Peter. That doesn't explain more cliche MJ in distress. That doesn't explain the awful casting for Eddie Brock. Come on now. A guy that makes a bad piece of art while being given stipulations is still a guy that made a bad piece of art. If I were working with a fellow musician and I told him that a song he was working on under my guidance needed to include an instrumental flute break in the key of G and he gave me back a song where not only did that break suck, but the entire song sucked, he would not be a guy that made a crappy song because I took too much creative control. He'd be a guy that made a crappy song.

I haven't seen any of Derrickson's work but although some people have mixed feelings on him, I'm seeing some positive feedback. And honestly a horror director might be best suited to bringing the supernatural and mystical world of Doctor Strange to life. It could potentially work with his style. Though given that the Asgardians were retconned into being a sci-fi alien race, I doubt we'll be getting a straight up Harry Potter esque film with magic in the MCU.
