Review: Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #10

This is better than the regular Spider-Man books.

No Caption Provided
When the feds come to nab Kitty Pryde for violating mutant law, Spidey & his Amazing Friends aren't quite sure how to help.

The Good

Talking about one specific scene, I have to say that the principal's speech to the emergency PTA meeting was powerful stuff. The "mutant prejudice" metaphor has been thoroughly explored, many a time, already but Bendis broached it again in such a way that really felt true. It was definitely a memorable scene. Even though this is set a high school and some people think it's the "kids stuff" version of Spidey, I have to say I was impressed by the sheer amount of twists and turns covered in just one issue. The reveal of the mysterious "red cloak" was a dramatic surprise and there was actually a great amount of complexity to Kitty Pryde's characterization here. Not only does she become a formidable antagonist, but you're always sympathetic to both her and Spidey's side of the conflict. Not once did it feel forced.

LaFuente's art is really appealing, capturing right range of "high school drama" with superheroic action. With some trace manga influence, he's got a unique style. And I have to say that splash of Kitty crying in the sewer was really striking.

The Bad

I like LaFuente's cartoon-style art for the most part, but there's a few points where it seems sparsely-detailed out of short-cutting rather than style. There really aren't that many instances of that, but they're noticeable.

The Verdict - 4/5

Having been a fan of the first volume of Ultimate Spider-Man, I was concerned that the launch of Ultimate Comics was going to stray too far from the original point of the whole line (that is, updating the MU and making it accessible to new readers). This series is definitely keeping true to that. You can pick this issue up and enjoy without having read a single issue of Spidey before. Actually, I'd recommend this over the "Earth 616" Spidey books at the moment. Spidey works a lot better as a teen in high school, and this is the right team for those kind of stories.

This was close to being my favorite book of the week.
This has always been my "main" spider-man book.
At least the art is better than what they had in the first half of the series, too manga-ish

I still pine for the days of Bagley.  :'(

That said, I'm still really enjoying Ultimate Spidey, and it to is my "main" Spider-man title.

It's hard to imagine that Bendis has been consistently turning out excellent stories for this title for ten years now with little to no lull in that whole time.

I've had a problem with laFuente's art since he came on board... I do have to admit that when an artist makes me believe the fictional character is feeling pain and crying then I have a new found respect for him...
For example in the Spectacular Spider-Man series the character designs were horrible... until Liz Allen went to a corner and cried...

It's easy to convey happiness and evil on art, but to convey pain and sadness is not.... That scene of Kitty's tear just going down her cheek was enough for me to say I am ok with the art!

Spidey doesn't only work best in high school, it's just that every writer under the sun is afraid to do anything with this character other than put him in high school.

@hectorbustnuts:
agreed Bagley's art was phenomenal, but at least we know that the series can both exist and succeed without him drawing.

I have to agree that this is probably outshining the other Spidey books, I really have found myself engrossed in the comic since I started reading it. Not read the latest yet (Hence my purposely avoiding the review XD) but so far I have enjoyed everything, the only exception being the way Bobby is being drawn, something about his head seems too round for me, he looks like the kid, also named Bobby, from the King of the Hill but maybe that's just fanboyism twisting my opinion XD

The whole OMD/BND debacle had me lose complete interest in the standard Spider-man story. Though, I do enjoy what is done with the Ultimate series. It feels like a breath of fresh air. The characters are interesting and the stories are good. I like how they don't feel the need to stick to many of the cliches of the main books.

There are always going to be people who dont like his art. But whats art without opinions. I personally love this art and feel like it complements the feel of the book really well. Great issue, but i dont like Kitty being "bad" but at the same time, i love how Kitty's powers were explored. And that scene was great. Im think Aunt May might go for the part of Principal. That would be fun. I honestly like this issue, but i dont like seeing Kitty like this.
