Review: Hellboy/Beasts of Burden One-Shot

A crossover I never thought would happen.

It might seem a little surprising to see Hellboy and the Beasts of Burden team up but once you get into it, it makes perfect sense.

The Good

Hellboy and the Beasts of Burden both investigate the paranormal. Why not have a crossover with these two titles? There isn't a lot of story development leading up to why they are teaming up but it wasn't necessary. The meeting was believable and allows you to jump right into the story. Jill Thompson's art and colors give the feeling that each panel is a work of art. You wouldn't think that Hellboy would work well with cute little animals but it provides a fun and enjoyable story.

The Bad

While the story was fun, it didn't quite have an epic feel. I understand that not all stories need to have a huge feel to them but the "case" here didn't blow me away. There is a connection to the Beasts of Burden but I almost felt like this one-shot didn't really add a lot to the mythos of either title. Also, there was a couple times Hellboy's legs looked a little too skinny. Maybe it was just me.

The Verdict - 3.5/5

I wasn't sure what to expect with this crossover but I was pleased with the result. It's a fun light-hearted adventure with some slightly intense moments. It was interesting seeing Hellboy interacting with cute critters while still waving his gun and fist around. If you're a fan of either series, pick up this issue for a fun time.
