Review: Gotham City Sirens #12

Surprisingly chilling.

With the help of Harley Quinn, Catwoman searches for her estranged sister while Poison Ivy escapes from captivity in the lab.

The Good

Ah... it's been a while since I've read a story with a good, unreliable narrator, so it was fun to experience most of this through the eyes of Catwoman's clearly demented sister, Maggie. The angle remind me a bit of the Bill Paxton movie, Frailty.  It gave the whole plot an added spice and made the parts where she kills the cat and brutalizes the exorcist all the more chilling. Seriously, the "splatter page" was messed up.  Kudos to Nguyen for rendering that scene so intensely and for putting out solid work throughout. The opening splash with Catwoman's office invasion was a great hook, made all the more compelling by Purcell's linework. And I have to say Poison Ivy's "flowery escape" was really cool - - it definitely didn't feel like a cheat.

The Bad

There's nothing wrong with this title, just to say that it didn't necessarily "light my fire" such that I'm eager to keep reading. I also would've liked to have seen more of Harley, since she's more or less relegated to the background in this issue. C'mon... she's the one everybody's in love with!

The Verdict - 3.5/5

Seeing as how I was around when Batman: The Animated Series first introduced the notion of the "Gotham City Sirens," it was fun to see these three vamps star in their own book. This is solid superhero book (or supervillainess book, to be more accurate) and good to get some Gotham City action even if you aren't interested in the return of Bruce Wayne.

I respectfully disagree and so do a number of Catwoman and Ivy fans. Read the chatter on the dc boards:

Harley has dominated this series to date at the expense of the other two characters. It's about time the other two got back some of the limelight.
