Review: Black Widow #1

Black Widow, Black Rose.

No Caption Provided
The Black Widow's run in with an old fellow spy, the Black Rose, leaves her vulnerable for a rather brutal bout of attack and torture from an unknown old foe.

THE GOOD
Once things get rolling, there's an appealing sharpness to Liu's script. The romantic dinner between Black Widow and Bucky Barnes, including Natasha's ducking out to threaten her neighbor's cheating husband, felt very genuine. You can believe that these are not only two intelligent adults out on date, but that they're also capable super-spies taking some time off. Bucky, Iron Man and Wolverine's reactions to her later hospitalization are similarly truthful Acuna's illustrations are really a marvel when they're on, producing panels that are akin to good photography.

THE BAD
Despite his talents, Acuna doesn't seem especially cut out for action. The two fights in this issue have some awkward poses and a reduction in line quality that really sticks out in comparison to the work in the rest of the issue. Also, I was a little put-off that the Black Widow takes such a vulnerable and passive role for the majority of this, the first issue of what's supposed to be her own series.

THE VERDICT
Though things get off to something of a start-stop beginning, once this get rolling, this is a tight comic. Considering that the action scenes floundered a little and that Natasha spends a good chunk of this issue sprawled out, I'd almost prefer to see a series just about how she lives her normal life with Bucky.

Liu's writer is really good here and I believe she really got who Black Widow is and how she should act, the art is good, but I do agree that the fights were off. And seeing how Bucky and Natalia acted together was very great writing indeed. Wolverine and Tony were nice to see since they have good friendship with Natasha, overall I thought this was a good issue and I'm looking forward to #2.

Man, I totally agree.  The most appealing part was her and Bucky.  Although I am curious to learn more about the villain.

Great review.  Spot on.

Wrong I'm afraid IMHO. Acuna's art kicks ass, as does Liu's story. This is a great comic - pick it up and see for yourselves before getting deterred, guys!

I enjoyed the full issue.  The introduction (to me anyway, has he appeared before?) of Black Rose, and their "meeting" was entertaining.  The way Liu and Acuna diverted from the opening of the second fight scene was great, I went back and looked for it again right away, lol.  The scene after the second fight, I think, is a good introduction to the mystery villain and adds to the suspence of wonderment.  It deffenatly makes me want to continue picking this book up even if I wasn't planning on it already.

As for Tony and Logan being in the book, honestly I'm tired of Logan being in all my DD ladies ooks, but I digress, I like the converrsation that takes place there.
(just in case their are other's that havn't read it yet )
Logan: Stop.  Step back.  You need to look at the bigger picture, if you want to help her.
James: What's that supposed to mean?  And why are you here and not with the X-Men
Logan: Business.
Tony: Enough.  We're wasting time.

I always wonder the underlined part as well.  LOL
