Review: Batgirl #10

This doesn't look as good in comparison to Red Robin.

No Caption Provided
The Calculator's vendetta against Oracle ratchets up as a throng of "zombies" are activated who have been programmed to kill the former Batgirl.

The Good

I did like the way Miller goofed on narrative captions throughout this, giving Stephanie Brown a neurotic nature to set her apart from other members of the Bat Family. The credits page splash was notably good, too - - good enough to be a poster. Garbet or Perez (I'm not sure who) put a great Scott McDaniel flair to the line-work, there, and Major's effects work - - blurring the soles of her boots to simulate depth - - gave it a lot of kick (to excuse the pun). Really, Major's coloring was notably good throughout, too.

The Bad

This whole issue just felt sort of... plain. Not really bad, per se (it's competently done), but not especially good either. And that applies to the art, too. It get the job done, to be sure, but there's not a lot of punch. I realize it's really difficult to find new things to do in a book like this, but the plotline of the Calculator activating zombie drones just seemed too familiar. It wasn't that exciting.

The Verdict - 2.5/5

There's really not that much to set this apart from any other superhero book on the shelf and I might be more charitable were it not for how good Red Robin was last week. That issue was done so well, makes this book, another Batman spin-off, look weaker by comparison

I like the character, but they don't seem to be even trying anymore with this comic which is making me pretty sad. There could be a ton of things to do with this character but they seem to be focusing on pointless stories that just bore the reader.

I dropped this after the Red Robin crossover.  Plus I only read it for Oracle after it was revealed to be Steph, with Birds of Prey coming out now there was no reason for me to read Batgirl.  It wasn't that good to begin with

I need Cassandra.  I hope with Bruce returning we will get her as well.  Stephanie just doesn't cut it as Batgirl. Cassandra back with new Birds of Prey, awesome?  yes yes.

Something about even the term "techno-zombies" seems like it is just set up to fail.

Im a big fan of Stephanie over cassandra, I always hated the Cassandra version of Batgirl. Stephanie feels more like Barbara but fresh..

She is the Wally West to Barbara's' Barry Allen
The Kyle Rayner to Barbara's Hal Jordan

well you know what i mean.

I've always thought Stephanie was the most bland character put on a comic page.  I really don't find a single thing interesting about her.

I loved Cass, unfortunately it seems every writer was payed to remove one thing that made her unique and interesting until there was nothing left.

I only have the first issue of this series, when I saw it was Stephanie I dropped the book.  (Actually, fist 2 issues, bought them together).

Whenever Cass is put in a book, i'll buy it, batgirl or not.

@suuperman:
While I cant agree with you on the "Stephanie over cassandra/ I always hated the Cassandra version of Batgirl" I do believe that she has a lot of potential to be a great character. I like her, but she has never completely "wow'ed" me either. She has that Hayden Panettiere/Claire Bennet sort of appeal to me the most unlikely candidate with that spark to be great. The ultimate underdog with something to prove...that always has potential.
