Preview: Batman #9 "I Am Suicide"

Batman gets his own Suicide Squad.

No Caption Provided

The next great Batman story, “I Am Suicide,” begins in BATMAN #9 by Tom King and Mikel Janin this October! In order to save Gotham Girl Batman recruits a team to break into the most impenetrable prison in the world and steal from one of the Dark Knight’s greatest foes… Bane.

“She’s been infected by the Psycho Pirate’s fear,” says King about Gotham Girl. "She needs to get that out of her head and the only one who can do that is the Psycho Pirate himself. So to save Claire—to save this one last remnant of this hope he has in issue #1—Batman has to find Psycho Pirate, and that mission leads him directly into Bane.”

"It’s Batman forming his own Suicide Squad,” says King about the new story arc I Am Suicide. "It’s Batman working with Amanda Waller, going into Arkham Asylum and picking out a special team to accomplish a mission that he can’t do on his own or with the Justice League. If you’ve read the end of BATMAN #6, you know that Bane has the Psycho Pirate, who can cure Gotham Girl. Batman needs to get him, but Bane lives in his own country. On top of that, he lives in a prison that’s the worst prison in the history of humankind. So Batman can’t just go in there because it’s illegal and impossible. So he needs a team who can do something illegal and impossible, and that’s the mission of the Suicide Squad. That’s where we start, with Batman making his own Suicide Squad to invade Santa Prisca and try to get Psycho Pirate back from Bane.”

"I don’t think of him as a fringe character,” says King about Psycho Pirate. "He plays a huge part in CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS. That’s where I was first introduced to him. He’s the guy who kills Barry Allen! So he’s played a role in the DCU for years. And then Grant Morrison took him into ANIMAL MAN and made him the one character in all of DC continuity who can remember the Multiverse. He remembers what happened beforehand. So he has both those aspects of him—he’s played a key role in this huge crossover and he also has this bizarre memory. He’s this huge character…and he’s a wimp. He’s a nobody! He’s terrible. He’s always manipulated by other people.”

BATMAN #9 arrives October 19th, 2016, written by Tom King with art and cover by Mikel Janin, colors by June Chung, letters by Clayton Cowles. Final order cutoff at your local comic book store is Monday September 26th.

Hopefully the Night of the Monster Men issues pass by fast and we get to this because it feels like it will be outstanding.

Huh, this actually looks interesting, but definitely not the Bane I'm used to.

Question: Has Bane shown up in the New 52, or will this be his first new debut since the N52 began?

@the_stegman: @apokos7: The Night of the Monster Men is part of the story. Hugo Strange gave Psycho Pirate to Bane in exchange for his Venom to make the Monster Men.

Yes. he has shown up in the New 52 multiple times, just look at his appearances in his character page.

@infantfinite128: No, Problems.

@the_stegman: I don't get what your trying to say? These mini-arcs are leading to the Night of the Monster Men from what I've read in interviews.

I know, it was in Batman 6. Having read both Batman and Nightwing this week though and deciding that they were bad I can hope the next three weeks fly by really fast for the Monster Men to wrap up so that I can forget that and move on to the Bane story. Plus I feel that it just serves as a connection between I Am Gotham and I Am Suicide and Hugo Strange won't be that big of a part moving forward.

I'm not a real fan of Bane but it looks like that's going to be changing soon! This gives me a reason to return to Batman after the crossover.

Bane's always an instant buy for me.

. . . Even though I still think Batman having a "Suicide Squad" is asinine, seriously King couldn't have just called them The Outsiders.

This looks great. I really enjoyed King and Finch's first arc and am excited to see Bane get the spotlight here. I'm also really curious to see how King continues to use Pyscho Pirate in this series. Doesn't hurt that Janin is illustrating this story arc too :)

@nightfang3: Thanks for that! I was skipping the event, but now I have to buy it. Bane's ma boy!

No need, Bane's portion was covered in Batman #6(final issue of I am Gotham). Proceed to I am Suicide, Monster Men is just another worthless crossover, it's just covering Hugo Strange's story from I am Gotham as an after thought.

Fantastic preview, one of the best I've read for a Batman book. Where was this King for the last 4 months? lets hope a lot more of this moving forward and a lot less of The character that shall not be named. It's clear King can do wonders when he actually cares about the characters he writing, just a few pages were rquired to make the Bane cool and interesting vs the 7 or so issues with Duke. more Bane and Catwoman moving forward, dont lose perspective Tom, prioritize.

Here's the Sale variant

ugh, Bane. Surprised any writer wants to waste time writing him after he was featured in that crappy Nolan movie, but then again King does like dusting off D-list villains.

At least we have the amazing Monster Men crossover to enjoy for now.

@entropy_aegis: Thank you so much! You saved me $18!

The only reason I jumped on Batman was because of Bane because I read your comments on the first issues, and I hold your opinion in high regard. I'm not reading any other books. I was thinking about getting Deathstroke, but it was just getting kind of average reviews. Then again, critics praise Scott Snyder as if he's sneezes masterpieces so maybe I shouldn't care. After seeing the critical reaction to the last issue of "Death of the Family" and seeing so many articles how incredible Snyder was, I think I should have learned.

The new deathstroke has been very enjoyable. Christopher Priest writing him and the art is just superb. as for this Batman series, i like it thus far. i haven't read the issue that came out this week but look forward to it as well. I'm also a Bane fan so this next arc with him in it should be a treat.

Thanks man and I would definitely recommend Deathstroke, the plot admittedly moves slow but the book is heavy and always leaves me full. That fullness comes from the extent of the characterization that Priest gives his characters, the people there actually feel multidimensional and real as opposed to writing hundreds of words as some writers are prone to. It's a smartly written book, that's for sure, give it 2 issues and then decide if you want to commit.

Cool. Deja Vu seeing the origin of Bane with modern art and story telling. Instantly saw Knightfall on those panels.

Is Night of the Monster Men worth reading? I've been picking up both Batman and Detective but haven't read Nightwing beyond the first issue. I don't want to read it if it's just a fill in but if it's actually good then I'll definitely check it out.

Nope, the creative effort started and ended with making the Monsters as big and grotesque as possible, now they have to be destroyed, it's filler in every sense of the word. Read Batman and the Monster Men by Matt Wagner if you can, Night of the Monster Men is bleh.

@entropy_aegis: I just finished reading issues 1 and 2. I haven't been interested in Slade since the Marv Wolfman days, and I wouldn't be surprised if this is going to be the run for the character. Thank you so much for the recommendation. I haven't been this excited for a Wednesday in a very long time!

If King's Bane isn't good, I guess I'll just stick with Deathstroke until Batman gets better. I know you said Nightwing is good, but I don't want to invest the cash if he's just going to pushed to the side for Duke and Gotham Girl. Same with Damian. The preview for Batman #9 looked great, so I guess I'll just have to wait and see!

You're welcome and yeah it's the dark horse book of Rebirth. I pray Tom King will prioritize moving forward. You can just ignore these crossovers for N-wing, they have nothing to do with his actual story.

Maybe this will be the issue when the real Tom King will finally come around and start making those Batman stories that we all want to see. From what I am seeing so far I think his Bane would be great but we have to wait and see for more of this issue and story when it comes out.

Not digging this new Bane origin and forgetting Knightfall happened. They took the human side away from the bat.
