Pilot Ordered for Walking Dead Spin-Off

We're one step closer to more Walking Dead on television.

No Caption Provided

Deadline reported today that the pilot for the Walking Dead spin-off television series has received the green light for the pilot. It seems AMC intends this to go to series describing this order as a "pilot episode." Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, and David Alpert from The Walking Dead are also serving as executive producers for the new show as well. Dave Erickson, who co-wrote the pilot with Kirkman will also serve as an executive producer and showrunner.

AMC President Charlie Collier has this to say:

Almost from the beginning of The Walking Dead on AMC, fans have been curious about what is going on in the zombie apocalypse in other parts of the world. In fact, beyond requests for zombie cameos, it’s the question I get asked the most. Obviously, we all take our stewardship of the original franchise incredibly seriously and we, along with Robert, Gale, David and now Dave, are all proceeding with extreme care in order to ensure that we are offering fans something truly compelling, engaging and distinct.

The pilot goes into production in late 2014 and season 5 of The Walking Dead returns to AMC on October 12th.

I think that it would be kind of cool to do this as sets of miniseries....like have 6 or so episodes during the Walking Dead's off season focusing on a different set of survivors from different parts of the globe each time

In his reddit ama Kirkman said the biggest thing he didn't like about the show was that in the end of season 1 the cdc guy said that it was happening in other countries, so I don't know if that'll happen. It is a cool idea though.

To be fair, it would be silly to have an apocalypse only going on in one country, especially as other countries would have come to sort it out by now if they were ok.

I think that the reason why Kirkman said that would be because he has never once hinted or talked about what is going on outside of the U.S. in the comic

If they wanted to follow other people besides Rick in the Walking Dead, why don't they just..... follow other people besides Rick in the Walking Dead. This is not a spin off. This is the same series.

Looking forward to it. Walking Dead is a great show. Hopefully this spin-off is more manly though.

because Rick is the main character of both the comic and the television show...they want to show what's going on in other areas of the country not just Georgia

I wonder what will set this apart from the original series . but other parts of the world? That idea does sound interesting.

Understood. Just like they have followed other people besides Rick for a little while, they could just simply follow still other people for even longer periods of time. Have Rick find a ham radio and talk to people in other places, then show what said people are up to. Nah mean?

That sounds good in theory and work in the comic book much better than it would on television. With a show you have to worry about actors and their pay. And AMC has already has issues with the budget of the show in previous seasons. So keeping the current cast while adding an entire new cast all within the same show simply isn't realistic from a monetary standpoint. By having a spinoff show they are doubling or at least increasing greatly their budget and adding the ad revenue that the new show will generate.

but why divide the screen time at all...the thing about Walking Dead is character development so having it your way would be cutting the already existing characters screen time in half...I don't see why anyone would want that

Getting a bit bored with the main series. I was a huge fan. I disagreed strongly with George A. Romero's comment that it was “a soap opera with a zombie occasionally” ; but now on reflection he is right. Looking at the apocalypse from different cultural angles would be interesting, similar to the original World War Z book. But to be honest I think the genre is declining. I just don't want WD to be the Twighlight of zombies i.e. the final nail in the coffin. Typical modern ways...take a great idea and flog it to death...then sell it to another channel so they can flog the carcass a bit more. By the end everyone is so bored of it that the potentially 'classic' nature of it dies.

They need to find a way to open the WD world up so that there can attempt to be a little relation. I believe they should be going down the route of having found a cure and trying to save what is left of the world ; this is almost unique in the whole zombie genre. Dragging a show on for a few years chasing cliffhangers gets a bit tiring...then obvious...and finally insulting.

If it's just as boring and meandering as the main show usually is, I'd rather not see it.

I predict once this comes out, the original show is going to really drop in quality. Just because one thing works, it doesn't mean you need to make more. That formula has never worked.

The iron's hot now, not a year or two after TWD is over because viewers lost interest.

@bloggerboy: Just saying sometimes these things can backfire, like others said in here. You bring two shows of the same series, one's going to get sidelined besides while WD is a great show, the whole "Zombie thing" has worn off a bit...honestly, I think once Flash starts, Arrow will take a bit of a hit because let's face it, Flash hasn't been on TV since the 90's as far as him being the main star, Arrow however between Smallville and Arrow it's like we've seen him already for like nearly 10 years now.

Just saying, it's good to share success when something is hot but you also don't want to be too greedy. All I'm saying.

@bloggerboy: Thanks, I can understand your points as well. Guess we'll see! I'm excited for it though, I love the current show cause of the characters.
