Off My Mind: Will the DC Universe Be Rebooted Again After Flashpoint?

Is it really that crazy of an idea?

No Caption Provided

Flashpoint has just begun and we know the DC Universe proper has been completely altered. Barry Allen awoke to find the world had changed. From what we know, he wasn't transported to another world, dimension or reality. He is in the actual main DC Universe. This was also seen in Booster Gold #44 when Skeets told Booster that they were in the same timeline.

Everything has changed. The heroes are different. Some of the heroes we know are actually dead and there are new versions of other ones. We, as comic book readers, know this isn't really a big deal. We've seen similar events with Age of Apocalypse, Heroes Reborn and recently Age of X. We know it's just a comic book event and things will eventually return to normal. We can sit back and enjoy this new twist to the characters we know and wait patiently for the return of what we've been reading.

There has been a rumor floating around about the fate of the DC Universe. In most of the regular titles, major storylines are approaching a firm conclusion (Wonder Woman's The Odyssey, Superman's Reign of the Doomsdays, etc). On August 31, 2011, there will be only one DC Comics issue released, Flashpoint #5, the final issue of the miniseries. Speculation has been brewing that after Flashpoint, the DC Universe might not revert back to its original form. Is there any way it'd be possible for DC to abandon all it's current ongoing titles in favor of the new characters and direction developing in Flashpoint?

== TEASER ==
No Caption Provided

The quick response is, "No way!" How could DC possibly turn its back on all us loyal readers and simply do away with the decades of character development we've had? If you really think about it, it's not really hard to believe they might do that.

No Caption Provided

How many times has the DC Universe been rebooted? First of all, we have the Golden Age, Silver Age, Bronze Age and current continuity that are not connected. For example, when Alfred first appeared in Batman #16, Bruce Wayne was an adult and Dick Grayson was already his ward. Alfred mentioned his father hand worked for the Wayne family but Bruce did not know him and was not raised by him after his parents were shot. We also have the other stories like Supergirl making out with her horse Comet. That hasn't happened in the current incarnation of the character.

Heroes Reborn rebooted several characters.
Heroes Reborn rebooted several characters.

The DC characters have had their origins tweaked many times over the years. What's to stop DC from doing it one more time? It's not a completely unheard of idea. Marvel sort of did the same thing with Heroes Reborn. The Avengers, Fantastic Four, Hulk, Captain America and Iron Man all had new origins. Anything that happened before didn't matter...until they made their way back to the regular 616 universe. Heroes Reborn lasted a year. There might have been a slight uproar over it but the books did sell.

If DC decided to continue the world of Flashpoint beyond the five issue miniseries, it would be easier for new readers to jump into the books. People may know everything about Superman's origin but if you were to think about picking up Action Comics to read about him, the fact that the issue is now in the 900s could be intimidating. That's 900 other stories that have gone by and the new reader might feel overwhelmed by the fact that there's a lot of history and events they've missed.

The sad fact is comic books don't sell the incredibly high numbers they used to. It was mind-boggling that Jim Lee's X-Men sold over 7 million copies and today's major books barely crack 100,000. Despite this, superheroes and comic books are becoming more popular in Hollywood. The truth is you can have millions of people that will see a comic book movie but less than a hundred thousand will actually read the comics. With a reboot of characters, DC could create new franchise after franchise. The success of Marvel's THOR shows that even characters that aren't as mainstream as Spider-Man or the X-Men can still make a lot of money.

What about the Batman movies? We're pretty sure that The Dark Knight Rises will be Christopher Nolan's final Batman movie. When the inevitable next movie comes out, it will be a reboot just as Spider-Man and X-Men are getting rebooted. The Batman movies could easily be rebooted to fit more closely to the Flashpoint version. The same could happen to Superman and Green Lantern. There's room to bend a little.

No Caption Provided

What do I honestly think? I don't believe DC would completely wipe out the 75 years of the characters we know, even if they have gone through changes over the years. What I can believe is that they could try to stretch out Flashpoint beyond the fifth issue in August. If this is a major event, we're getting five issues in only four months. The big comic events usually last much longer than that. Sure the Flash may be involved but why is there a need to rush this along?

Over the next couple weeks, if the Flashpoint miniseries are successful, I could totally see DC 'announcing' that the world will carry on this way...at least for a little bit longer. They may try to convince us that they are going to cancel all their other titles and replace them for another month or two or three. After everyone has their say whether they love the idea or hate it, DC can decide what they will do next.

No Caption Provided

I don't have a problem with change. Spider-Man changed his costume. Superman died (and later got electric-based powers). Iron Man was replaced by Rhodey. Captain America and Batman both died. Eventually things return to the status quo. There is no need to get in an uproar when a character goes through a major change. They always return to what we know because it's what we know. Do people really want rehashes of the same old stories over and over? There's nothing wrong with trying to mix things up once in a while. Let the publishers experiment a little and give us fresh takes on characters and go in different directions. Then after it's played out, the characters will go back to their old ways. DC most likely will not reboot their entire line of comics and characters but if they did for a little bit, I would be totally okay with that.

At some point it will be. But I hope it is not for a long time. I have really enjoyed the new universe.

The one thing thats does bother me with New 52 is that it's throwing away years of writing and art to a new generation of comic readers. I have been collecting comics since 2008 (when I was 9) and I have to say that the fun part of getting into the comics was doing the research and finding out more of the characters you'd like to get into. I think I am more mad a DC because on their website they are claiming that everyone's first appearance was in the first New 52 issue they were in. I understand that they rebooted their world, but they shouldn't act as if the comics done by the legends (Bob Kane, Bill Finger, Joe Shuster, Jerry Siegel, Martin Nodell, etc.) never really exist. Also of Harley Quinn's new costume. I just don't think of that or imagine when I think of Harley.

Though I am hesitant about this change I am going to try to get a couple of the new titles. I figured since when Neil Gaimen's "Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?" his take on the death of Batman was so good I went back and collected a lot of the older comics. So really since that was newest comics I bought of Batman (my favorite DC hero). New 52 shouldn't bother me.

Reboot wishes ......
Black Canary never hooks up with Green Arrow.
There is only 1 Batman.
New Krypton, War of the Supermen, Grounded never happens.
Superman doesn't hook up with Lois Lane.
Aquaman keeps his hand.
Wally West is the Flash.
Hal Jordan is dead.

As far as change goes, i think Jim Lee and Geoff Johns are a good pair to do it. Partly due to X-Men's success upon gaining Lee and Claremont, and partly cos i'm used to Jim Lee's art

I was thinking to myself that this would never happen, but you guys totally called it. Here's hoping they don't destroy 76 years of work.

Amen! I understand Justice League, God knows that Robinson wasn't doing anything ever since he got paired up with Bagley, as well as with Wonder Woman. But rebooting Superman, Batman, Green Lantern? Coming out with a 52-issue reboot? That's damn near blasphemous! It is industrial insanity and sincerely unnecessary! I was looking forward to have Detective Comics #900 by next year, which at the same time, coincides with the release of The Dark Knight Rises. This example alone is a missed opportunity that DC could have sincerely solidified their footing in comics...

@danhimself: I don't know, seems kind of weird to have Flash travel to this universe of rebooted superheroes and then travel to another universe that becomes to main DCU. It's either he'd make it home to his original universe (Not happening) or stay in the one he traveled too (probably).

John Constantine is still going to be in the new reboot. He's going to appear in the Lois Lane series.

See that trench coat wearing blond guy in front of London's own Big Ben? Take a wild guess on who that is.  As for Swamp Thing and Batman....meh....About time those characters got a reboot. If it means something new and original and fresh. I'll take it.
that's a Flashpoint book not a new DC Universe book
Flashpoint is the event that's rebooting this universe. Obviously the Flashpoint universe is going to become the new dc universe. Once Flashpoint ends, all of the ongoing series reboots back to a new issue #1. That's the whole point of the reboot. No DC comics will be brought out in August except for Flashpoint, then everything is wiped clean and rebooted. My guess is that the new rebooted series will be in this new Flashpoint universe (which means John Constantine will be in this new rebooted universe) or another universe (Unlikely but if that is the case then it's a toss up if John is in that new universe or not)

But Flashpoint is the whole reason for the reboot, so it's safe to say this new flashpoint universe will probably be the new DC universe

It's been confirmed by Bleeding Cool that DC is indeed rebooting this universe.

I say, GOOD RIDDANCE.

It's about time for some new refreshing interpretations of these characters. The best stories coming out of DC now are the one from alternate universes or serve no purpose to the overall universe. Mainly because it's something new and fresh. Some of these characters, mainly Superman and Wonder Woman have become stale and boring.

BRING ON THE REBOOT.

What D.C needs to do IS have one final Crisis that really sticks..... I understand Bruce Wayne,  Clark Kent, and Wonder Woman etc. are iconic but c'mon. They've been milked dry. They are *dare I say* too old. These guys need to be put to rest before people lose all respect for them. Whenever I see something like this I know whats going to happen. It's TOO predictable. Something big happens but in a year or two, it's as if nothing happened. All the dead and/or warped super heroes are returned to normal and all is right with the world. DC sales are falling because they aren't willing to take a chance. If this whole Flash Point thing really does end up rebooting the big DCU, I for one hope they stick to it. Im a huge Batman fan and I think Thomas Wayne as Batman COULD be a good thing. Sure it's a slap in the face to all the Old School Batfans, but im pretty sure Batman getting canned for good would be an even bigger one. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

I decieded to look at everything that is going on in August before in the ominous Flashpoint 5, It seems that Batman Incorporated the showdown with the Leviathan Group in the last issue,  Gates of Gotham wraps up this month as well. For Clark the Grounded arc is completed with a possibility of him losing what he holds dear (my Bet it involves Lois, hopefully not a DC One More day copy) and in Action has the "final" battle with Doomsday, These few titles along with some others may give a dark feeling to most people,   But at the same time in Red Robin Tim finally gets his new HQ ready and deals with Boomerang. Dick and Damian seem to have an adventure that will continue as well. I know I only mentioned a few of the story arcs but it seems that some books have plans to be continued. I have a feeling that it won't be a reboot. perhaps slimming down the number of books somehow. I can't see them getting rid of all the things they have built upon over the last few years. Perhaps they are cutting down on the number of flashes as part of this.
Well, they did hint at the termination of Green Lantern Corps. So, I don't know, I better take this with a grain of salt.
I agree with the grain of salt theory, with the GL Corps, I mean it's been "terminated" before.

Have to agree with Raven575. Puh-leese! Let's give these epic themes a break. Usually we have a universe changing storyline once a decade, now DCU does it every month or so. DCU wonders why comic sales are down? It's because readers don't want to buy 50 or 60 issues just to get a storyline. The recent Green Lantern story arcs are a prime example. You couldn't JUST buy Green Lantern to completely follow Blackest Night or Brightest Day, you had to buy all the tie-in titles. Just by reading Brighest Day, you would never know what happened with Max Lord and Magog, if anyone actually cared. My thoughts, narrow down the titles and just get along with normal story lines. We don't need four or five Superman, Batman, Green Lantern titles - one will do. As far as Flashpoint - not read any, not paid any attention to it. As far as the last DC issues I've read, DCU is going downhill. Perhaps it is time to put DCU down like a horse that broke its leg.
LOL Are you willingly ignoring the clusterfuck that was Marvel's Siege or Shadowland? Please! Blackest Night, as an event, was very coherent. You didn't need to buy all the issues unlike with Marvel's crossovers. It's mind-numbing and headache-inducing what Marvel does, and you say that's what DC does? And as for the number of titles, they happen to work just fine. I seriously don't see a problem with having GL, GLC and GL:EW, their stories are self-contained until WotGL, which also happens to do just fine; last week's reviews are a testament to this. You say you don't need multiple titles? Well, I do! It's called variety.

Hey, as long as there's a good story behind it and the character is still respectable as it's original version.. then I have no problems with reboots whatsoever.

oh no please enlighten me with your vast comic book intellect =)

;p

on a serious note though. I do not follow these big story lines that much. They tend to be rather disappointing and just not worth it.
How many reboots or big "change" events have we had to go through with DC?
If they are changes that will stick Ill welcome them. But if they brush them off in a year...last DC big event I purchase.

It'd be a shame if they do reboot things. They've done it too much now, to the point where it's becoming as ridiculous as the number of characters who get resurrected.

I think this is a good idea. The comic book industry needs some new, big things happening.
Only that the 900th DCU reboot is not a 'big thing'. It is a boring think which feels like it has been done over and over already.

Also, the motivation of DC for spreading this rumor is rather transparent. Of course they need to give people the feeling that this is the real deal, that Flashpoint will really change the status quo. 'cause if people expect that after Flashpoint everything will revert back to normal, then DC's big summer event suddenly downgrades about 5 levels from 'blockbuster must-have event' to 'extended What If story'.

I have to say a full scale reboot wouldn't be so good in my opinion and I can't really see Morrison letting that happen with the way he is setting up Inc and the Tim Drake being in charge of the Outsiders along with all the other plans that involve Batman. I know somepeople have problems with Morrison but he could be a reason to hope for a few correcting changes versus a total reboot.
I could see things happening such as the return of some of the more pointless deaths such as Garth, and Lian, Perhaps, (I hope), one of the changes faceing the Superman comics (since Flashpoint may affect it), is the return of Chris from the Phantom Zone. I really hope it isn't the retconning of Clark and Lois's marriage.  I agree that there might be changes for Wonder Woman, hopefully for the better. I would hate Bart to be destroyed, since we just got him back.

It's about time I think.  Personally I think they need to retire or at least semi-retire some characters and invent some new ones, or at least give more focus to some lesser known preexisting characters.

My guess is Johns will use this like he used Infinite Crisis to tweak some stuff, but it'll more or less go back to being the same. That or there will be a couple of miniseries that branch out of this for a bit before things gradually go back to being the same.
